How do you organise your photos?

I'm a moron. I just lost 300 odd photos because I can't keep myself organised.

Right now I'm using iPhoto on my Mac and I was using folders on a windows laptop. When I moved over to my Macbook I formatted my windows laptop thinking I had these photos on the main Mac and I don't.

The only good news is the girl wanted a copy of the shoot and she's told me she still has it so I might get them back.

Anyway, enough about how stupid I am. I wanna' know how do you keep your photos organised? Folders? Some naming system? A software package?

I need something to track files, track reasons for deleting and some hardware so this shit doesn't happen again.

I haven't found a really good way yet. I'm using iphoto on the Mac, but the annoying thing when you export from iPhoto you loose all your organization stuff. I use a program called: iPhoto to JAlbum Exporter, which will export with all the folders and things properly, but it's slow and kind of a pain...

first by date and name: 120519/Mary-Bill, in a manila folder with the docs and content burned to BD and stored in in file cabinets. and bu copies of the content w/ id's on drives stored in the closet. a word doc with all the shoots listed by date on the PC to locate folders/shoots in the file cabinet quickly by model name.

I use folders with date and name of models. Often times I can just remember the vague time frame and then I can find the shoot since it is sorted by date. For finding a particular model I can just search the names of the folders.

"YYYYMMDD - model names"

Also saved on a Drobo (for redundancy in case a drive goes bad).
