When you day "everything dissapeared from my start menu", do you actually mean EVERYTHING, or do you mean you get only the global icons, like you are logged in as a guest?

It sounds like your user profile got corrupted. There is some debugging you can do. Since I haven't used Winblows in over a decade I won't try to walk you through the exact steps for Windows 7, but a full system restore is not the only option. Your local independent computer store or Windows tech could help you out. (Not the $8 / hour wage kid at Best Buy that you pay $100 / hour for).

User profile corruption or one of those annoying malware packages.

As said above, system restore. If that doesn't work, download Malwarebytes from http://www.malwarebytes.org/, remove whatever your PC picked up and then go here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic401172.html

That happens sometimes on one of my rendering computers. Usually, a quick log off and back on again fixes it.

I think it has something to do with sleep mode and some incompatibility in your system. Was the computer asleep before this problem?

Must've been that "set show hidden files and copy c:\" backup method. :/

you have either malware/virus that put everything in hidden mode or your profile got corrupted. I'd go to Folder options in Explorer, then View tab and enable 'show hidden files and folders'.

If it's not that backup everything, run a complete scan on the hard drive just in case, it's possible you're getting corrupt sectors on it that may be affecting things

Did you run something like ccleaner with all the options?

                          From the wilderness...

I've heard that Windows 7 and IE 9 require that you sacrifice your first borns and masturbate over a corpse so it can receive your seed...

I don't know any more... Apple?
