Heroine addict breaks into random 67yr old woman's home for a burglary. Brutally stabs and kills her

Barbara Coyne. 67, was murdered inside her South Boston home on Patriots Day by a man intent on robbing her of valuable fishing gear that belonged to the victim?s son, authorities said today.

The motive for the attack on Coyne was disclosed in South Boston Municipal Court when Timothy Kostka was arraigned on charges of home invasion and first-degree murder. Kostka, 26, pleaded not guilty to all charges and was ordered held without bail.

In a courtroom crowded with relatives of both Coyne and Kostka, who is also a South Boston resident, Suffolk Assistant District Attorney Ursula Knight disclosed the alleged motive for what she called a ?senseless murder?? of a woman ?at home enjoying a typical day.??

Knight said that last year Kostka told an associate that he was robbing South Boston homes by breaking into them while residents were sleeping. He also allegedly disclosed what he planned to do if he ever encountered a homeowner, the prosecutor said.

?When asked what he would do if they woke up, he said he would slash their throats,?? Knight said, arguing that Kostka should be held without bail.

The prosecutor said Boston police have linked Kostka to the murder through forensic evidence and by talking with area residents.

Knight also said that around 9:30 a.m. on April 16, the day of the murder, Kostka contacted someone and asked that person how much money he could make by reselling high-end fishing equipment. The prosecutor said Kostka knew Coyne?s son kept high-end fishing equipment in the house.

Coyne was attacked around 10 a.m. in her East Seventh Street home, authorities said.

Her son, Richard, discovered his mother?s battered body. He lives in a different apartment in the same house. An avid runner, he had taken the Boston Marathon off because of the heat, but he had stepped out of his mother?s apartment to return to his own apartment when the attack happened, the prosecutor said.

The son did own high-end fishing equipment but it was not in his mother?s house at the time, prosecutors said.

Kostka allegedly rummaged through the house looking for items to steal. After the robbery and murder, Knight said, Kostka went to another Boston neighborhood to purchase drugs.

Authorities have said the cause of Coyne?s death was ?sharp force injury.??

Barbara Coyne was the sister-in-law to a brother of former police commissioner Paul Evans and current Boston police Superintendent William Evans.

Kostka appeared in the courtroom today over the objections of defense attorney William Gens, who had asked Municipal District Court Judge Michael Bolden to keep his client out of public view. Bolden rejected Gens?s request.

Gens told the judge that Kostka is a native of South Boston and a high school graduate who is currently participating in an electrician training program. He said that there was no evidence connecting Kostka to other break-ins in the neighborhood.

Gens also dismissed what authorities allege was a strong forensic connection between Kostka and the murder. Prosecutors said Kostka?s fingerprints were found on various items inside Coyne?s home, but Gens said the defendant?s family and the victim?s family had known each other over the past 20 years.

Gens also said Kostka has a twin brother.

Bolden ordered Kostka, who was already in custody on an unrelated charge when he was formally accused of killing Coyne, held without bail.

Kostka is due back in court May 24.

This guy was a loser and a scumbag. Doing drugs isn't what made him that way. He already was that way.

Doctors, lawyers, politicians, preachers, and law enforcment are among the millions of people who also use drugs to have a good time. They don't go around doing shit like this.

This particular guy would have done something like this no matter what. He is a killer and a thief and has something horribly wrong in his mental makeup.

I think society spends too much time taking a case like this of a crazy person (anybody who would do this is insane in my opinion) and using it to punish the rest of society.
