I would suggest that the reason most people can't, or won't, upgrade their older versions is due to a reliance on 3rd party plugins that are incompatible with newer versions of wordpress.

Anytime I speak with a site owner having issues with their blogs, it seems to point back to themes using deprecated calls or a reliance on 3rd party plugins that are no longer actively developed.

When deciding to use plugins, it's a good idea to choose ones that will not completely break a site's functionality should you upgrade and have to disable it.

Personally, I would recommend using as few 3rd party plugins as is possible. For ourselves, a little scripting in the themes we use allows us to not rely on most plugins. (I think we use 2, maybe 3, none of which breaks functionality if an incompatibility exists (ex. Akismet)).

I don't understand why Wordpress doesn't make one fucking secure version instead of trying to expand their bloatware so it can be all things for everybody.

Christ, make a stable, secure blogging platform already.

I started using WP in 2005. It was a sleek, sublime bit of programming. A joy to use. Now, its a nightmare that resembles the retarded bastard child of Microsoft Windows and Facebook.

I've updated my WP sites - I won't use the word "upgraded" when it comes to this nonesense - but I no longer actually update them. In fact - in spite of my philosophy of "build and forget" - I've deleted a bunch of them. Static html is a much better solution for sites that aren't updated more than once a month.

Having a Wordpress site is like having a very stupid, untrustworthy child with ADD and Tourette's Syndrome.

But who cares...

garce: It's an interesting situation to me. While WP has made it easier for anyone to have a site, it's userbase now ranges from the most technically proficient to what seems like a huge demographic that has little to no knowledge of even the most basic of skills (ftp'ing in ASCCI or BINARY format... most don't even understand the difference).

As a result, unless the host is willing to secure up any basic holes, WP self-hosted blogs are just ripe for abuse by others.

I'll bet most users don't even do basic security like htaccess protection of their admin area, or restricting uploads to specific users/ip's.

It doesn't feel like a proper week if I haven't had to upgrade Wordpress.
