Although I haven't experienced it and hope I never will, wasn't it great director Samuel Fuller who once said something to the extent that the only way to give an audience a realistic war experience in a movie was to shoot one of them dead, terrorizing the rest of them, then shoot live rounds over their heads and blind them with smoke and flash grenades....
That said, I agree with Cross of Iron, Apocalypse Now, etc... that have been mentioned here, but there's three great stand-outs for me from my movie-viewing history.
I would add Full Metal Jacket, The Big Red One and Hamburger Hill to the list.
Also, though from a different angle, Schindler's List is pretty much an unforgettable experience on that level...
