Act of Valor - although its not a war movie persay, had some realistic scenes (some awesome firepower, too...with the gun boat).

Although I haven't experienced it and hope I never will, wasn't it great director Samuel Fuller who once said something to the extent that the only way to give an audience a realistic war experience in a movie was to shoot one of them dead, terrorizing the rest of them, then shoot live rounds over their heads and blind them with smoke and flash grenades....

That said, I agree with Cross of Iron, Apocalypse Now, etc... that have been mentioned here, but there's three great stand-outs for me from my movie-viewing history.

I would add Full Metal Jacket, The Big Red One and Hamburger Hill to the list.

Also, though from a different angle, Schindler's List is pretty much an unforgettable experience on that level...

What's the most realistic war movie ever?

I'm going to go with All Quiet on the Western Front.

The Great Battle (Liberation: The Break Through, Liberation: Battle for Berlin, Liberation: The Bulge of Fire)

Period.

Hollywood trumps it up to be "patriotic" (puke) and "heroic" to get the lower class to keep joining the army :2 cents:

Thank you for your Marxist-Leninism. And I believe the quote you might be after is:

"Surviving is the only glory in war."
Again, from Sam Fuller.

Yeah, having read the book the movie was based on, they pretty much candy coated censored the black hawks going up and down the mob in the streets and indiscriminately mowing down hordes of women and children that were acting as human shields. That sort of thing doesn't look heroic in Hollywood. Way easier for an audience to digest a bunch of dark skinned people wearing towels on their heads shooting Ak-47s getting blown to bits.

Beautiful out today .... and to quote a line from one of my favorite fake war movies, Kelleys Heros "I'm drinking wine, eating cheese and catching some rays" today.

talk to some real veterans who went through nam and actually killed people (i have them in my family)

war movies are nothing but fantasy when you talk to real vets. in fact its glorified and made up more than it was truthful when it comes to these movies,...

My father was in the Vietnam War and actually likes some of the Vietnam movies. Of course movies aren't going to be fully realistic but he enjoys seeing some of the things they do get right and going into one of this Vietnam war stories :) which I like because he always has tons of interesting war stories. He got drafted right out of high school but he says he doesn't regret being drafted at all and that it helped make him the person he is today.
