If gay couples were interested in equal right they would advocate making civil unions equal to then marriages under the law

anti discrimination laws apply to churches too
a church can't for example deny black people the right to marry without getting sued
legalizing same sex marriages would open churches to those same anti discrimination laws since gays and lesbians are a recognized minority.
Legalize gay marriage (a religious institution) is all about making that possible
making civil unions (the government side of the institution) legally equivalent is about equality.
