GFY Fathers that have sons might relate to this....

So my weekend was going more or less ok.

I was bummed about having to miss the phoenix show, but happy that my sister, and my brand new born niece made it through ok. My 6 month old son had his first cold and the poor little guy was miserable at the end of the week, but he got better by the weekend. I was invited to test drive the new 650 hp Ferrari FF, and it was fantastic, made my BMW feel like a piece of crap, but then....

....On Sunday late afternoon, we are hanging with some friends at the pool at the Perry hotel in South Beach, I'm taking Akiva, my 6 month old son, into and out of the pool, (he loves boats and the water, total Miami boy). I walk up our cabana to take him into the pool again, he looks up at me, gives me a big toothless grin, raises up his arms like usual, and then chirps what sounds just like "Dada!"

I stop for a second, look at my wife, and she is looking a bit shocked. I pick him up and he looks at me and says "Dada!" again. He kept on saying it all evening when we got home, every time he looked at me.

My heart filled up so much it felt like it was going to squeeze out all of my other internal organs. It's his first word. It's magical. I can't wait to get home from my office and see him again and see if he keeps on saying it tonight.

Nice. My "baby boy" is 19 years old now. I remember those days fondly though.

My kids have taken to calling me by my first name. It was cute at first and now it drives me crazy.

They're still too young to know better, and hopefully they'll grow out of it shortly.

Yeah, I don't think that having my son call me or my wife by our first names is going to happen.....

Isn't it fantastic?

Its one of the most amazing feelings in the world.

The calling the parents by their first names? My older ones do it, mainly to get a rise, but I don't allow them the courtesy of that, haha

I started calling my mom by her first name as a teenager, whenever she failed to respond to the same question/request directed to 'mom'. It got instant results. I still use it whenever I don't want to have to repeat myself or to get her immediate attention.

@sperbonzo
No kids here, but I can imagine how joyful hearing that was. Especially, as 'mama' is much easier to say and so is likewise far more frequent as a first word.

Those are the best memories when they are little like that. All the stuff that they do when they are young fills you with so much joy. Just wait there will be many more of these memories to come as he gets older. Just wait till they make you proud when they graduate from college, or do some extereamly thoughtful gester for you. nothing like unconditional love

It's an amazing feeling.

When I was younger, I never understood why people in the workplace talked about their kids so much. They never shut up about it. But now being a parent I understand - and I see the world completely different.

And the older my kid gets, the better it gets.

It only gets better, especially when they point to you and say it. My son took his first steps on fathers day, and his first words were dada, my daughter's first word was dada too but she may have just been copying her brother.

Now i want to facetime them.

True story, I whip out the iphone pics to everybody and their mothers.
Look at him!

Mine's 1 year and almost 2 months and every day is a blast.
He learned no no no the other day and it's his favorite word by far, including raising his little finger and waiving it. I'm happy I can work from home and have as much time with him as possible. They grow up so fast and I don't wanna miss a thing.

I had that for a while (years ago)

We solved it by calling each other 'Mommy & Daddy' when talking to each other infront of our son...

So instead of saying - 'Bill... Can you fetch me the...' it was 'Daddy.... Can you' etc...

Soon put an end to the issue...

Have you had his hearing tested? Impaired hearing is the leading cause to delayed speech development as well as impact socialization skills.

not for a while no, it is something I look out for, but have not hit the "alarm" button on that yet...he's actually come a long way recently so at this point I'm thinking different kids develop at different times...when i consider how much my daughter talks..he can take his time at least for a bit

I have a 3 1/2 son and a 5 year old daughter. Nothing like now hearing them at 1AM screaming out because they had a bad dream "daddy"!!! Yes you need to wake up but there is a part of you that thinks - "man the trust level and love they have that when they need help/protection they call for me".

Yes congrats on hearing those words and the huge grin that comes along with it when they see you walk into the house after missing you all day.

<proudFather> My little boy is about 1.5 now. At this age he is becoming very self aware - I went to Phoenix and returned home early AM on Monday. When he woke up in the morning he yelled the biggest "Daddy" and leaped on to me with a huge hug... Was a very happy welcome..</proudFather>
