Anyone here ever buy furniture from Ethan Allen?

So I'm thinking about getting a new desk. I found a great one at Ethan Allen. Simple and minimal. About $750. Appears to be good quality. I then go online and read horror stories that Ethan Allen was great at one time but now sucks on all fronts. Quality, service, etc. Anyone have experience?

Never trust someone with 2 first names.

Same goes for twats who have surnames as first names.

I'd be afraid of a desk that cheap, unless it was temporary (i.e., at your second or third house), or you planned to replace it soonish.

Our dining room set in the last house was from Ethan Allen, and one thing I can tell you is that it retained the value. We got 75% of what we originally paid when we sold it, and I got a TON of calls on it.

What would you recommend as being a good quality, timeless desk, that can be passed down to future generations?

stay away from ikea that for sure. best go the vendor in person and check the quality of the desk... go to a REAL furniture store, not office depot etc. figure around 1k +/-

Correct, I looked at a couple of Ikea pieces in the past but the bottom line is that I consider much of what they sell as disposable. You move it from one house to another once or twice and it won't be the same. It is better than sitting on the floor but just not what I am looking for. I started out my quest at Ethan Allen mostly because they are a few miles away form the house. Lots of nice stuff but I found some really bad stories online that makes me question the curent quality. I want a piece that will look great, function great, and last a lifetime.

go to a few more places in person... don't worry about online stuff... I've found a good relationship with a local vendor is better than saving $50-$100 online.

as a content shooter I've really been going though furniture that last 10 years, and I've found paying more does really make the difference. for instance the ikea stuff fell apart, and the cheaper couches and chairs all fall apart.

so now instead of a $600 couch I'll pick up a $2500 sectional couch, same with beds... although I can get a good bed with mattress for about $900

I have Ethan Allen furniture from the 1980s that is is still solid, though the upholstery shows normal wear so it should be re-covered. I'll inherit some wood furniture my mom has from Ethan Allen also from the 1980s that's almost like new.

In a few minutes on Google you could probably learn a lot about how to tell quality wood furniture from lesser quality, then go look at that desk. I have a very high quality solid oak desk and I paid about $750 for the desk itself. Then add the attached hutch, credenza, and bookcase.

So I am finding some really interesting options on Etsy. Hand made in the USA by real craftsmen with reclaimed hard woods that can be customized in the $1K-$1500 range.

I would check the company's references, because I'm pretty sure that Ethan Allen died a long time ago...

think I got my desk in 1986/1987. was second hand then and apart from needing a polish it's still pretty smart.

they are a little over priced for pretty basic furniture.

Some of it's high quality, some of it is not so good. We have a lot of Ethan Allen stuff. What I can say is I had my laptop on my desk and the heat from the laptop caused the desk top to split. Ethan Allen came to my house and replaced that. Some of the furniture is lower quality wood with wood veneers on top of it so watch out for that. Also make sure you investigate the pieces they drop off while they are there. Had a delivery of a couch from them with bad stitching.

Ikea Jerker desk .... $175 and it has steel beam reinforcement underneath .. + cable trays for $20 more if that.

It is a straight up, great computer desk that mine holds dual 27 inch monitors, keyboards and has served me well for 12 years now.

$40 for a steel box case from Ikea that has 8 draws for all your cables and stuffs ...

... why spend more?... I've generated millions in sales from this desk.
