This is very very true and you learn this through bitter experience.

I have gotten to the point where I will write out a long narrative, provide example sites and what I like about them, I will cut and paste layouts into photoshop to make graphics of layouts and how I want them.

Needless to say, it takes a lot more prep time and you could spend a whole morning on it. However, I have found that you will get better results. Most of the stuff delivered will be 75-90% of what I wanted on target, with some minor changes to be made.

You have to think about how you want your project to flow.

yeah no kidding ... what I did was lay out all the functions I need per page, in word, since I'm having a dynamic site built, and then let the designer work out the look and provide wireframes... handling all the backend myself....

my concern is fonts, colors, consistency across the site and a really positive UX experience for the end users. I have no real insight into those areas so a pro was called for... and I went with a reliable mainstream ecommerce designer.

I'm very happy with the results so far

Yeah, with a Wacom tablet, Photoshop standard brush, smudge and a bunch of layers. I used sharpen a bit on that one, too.
