How do I safely wipe a hard drive

I wanted to get rid of one of my old computers... simply formatting the drive is not enough to erase the information on it

considering the business I/we are in, I'd like to make sure the drives are completely wiped before donating it or whatever

Last hard drives, I just ran a hammer and chisel through them, but it does seem like a waste

Delete all folders that you can while in Windows, then use bcwipe

All you do is open the file manager, right click on the c: drive, then select 'delete with wiping' ..

It'll do the rest..

make win98 bootable floppy, put fdisk on it, boot off the floppy, fdisk the disk the hard drive, format it the hard drive, then do it all again just to be safe . . .

A cheap hard drive does not cost very much, I think I'll just destroy the old ones and buy a new small one, if I donate it to a school or something

alls I need is some innovative kid "...look what I found..."

yep.. works ok, i use the freespace wipe on a scheduled basis, wipes 3 times per session. i trust pgp, although i'm sure if you're determined enough, you can get it out there. wipe the drive with pgp, fdisk & reformat. probably would be safe "enough".

not selling to the gov't, are we?

anybody thought about using a nasty magnet? have to re-low-level format afterwards, most likely, and it would have to be one bad-ass magnet.

You could fill the drive after removing everything. That way the old stuff should get covered up.

If I don't say this... somebody else will.

1) Remove hard drive from pc.

2) Find a soft cloth.

3) Gently wipe your drive.
