640x480 - 3.97%
1280x1024 - 2.98%

800x600 is good for 15'' monitors.

Got to remember a lot of users are on older systems and outdated video cards still. I was at a friends house last week and saw they had a PC with Win 95 running at 640 x 480 with 256 colors. LOL She didn't even know you could change the display settings.

Yeah I hate having to make sites look good for the low res people. Everything will look cool on 1024 by 768, then switch to 800 by 600 and its all big and gay

I always do my designs on my 15' monitor and on 800X600 resolution.

After a while, things seems to be smaller ...

Always design your sites for the lowest common denominator user.

Prior to 2000 this was 640x480 in 65k colours

Now its 800x600 in 24bit

I reckon it will be 1024x768 by the end of next year.

Alot of surfers are dumb with computers.
Most new computers come with a 17" screen now but the default res. is 800x600 and almost none of them knows how to change that.
Unless it's a site for webmasters I would always use a site that looks good at 800x600.
I wouldn't worry about 640x480. People still using that resolution prolly don't have a dime to spend so not worth much.

I've been working online for six years full-time, I have a 17 inch monitor and yes I know how to change the resolution. But I choose to have it set at 800x600. Why? Because most sites are optimized for 800x600 and those that aren't were designed by morons who haven't got a clue! You can't afford to allienate 50% of your visitors! Plus there's also the fact that I design/run/review sites and need to know what visitors are seeing.

okay, i tried switching to 800x600 to visit some popular sites.
everything looks so huge.

Does GFY have a horizontal scroll ? I get it.
Does Thumbzilla have a horizontal scroll ? I get it. Looks very ugly.

Pretty strange...it looks more like 640x480. <Maybe i'm having some Video Card issues ?

Now you're seeing the sites the way over 50% of your visitors see them. Sure they look big, just like sites look small to me when I view them at 1024x768. If you visit a site like Zilla and you can't see the entire design it's probably been optimized for 1024x768+, which ain't real bright because now you've rendered your site difficult or impossible to view by 50% of your visitors. Just my opinion though

They need to change the factory settings to 1280x1024 for sure. 800x600 is just pure ugly.

Yep I get a scrollbar on both. However I can see all the content at GFY without scrolling, so I assume (couldn't be bothered looking at the code) it's just the width of the top graphic which is causing the horizontal scrollbar to appear. As for Zilla, it's those text links to the far right and I can't read them without scrolling.

I think it would be cool if all monitors were set to the same resolution. It would make things a lot simpler for everyone

Maybe Microsoft will bundle a monitor with their next release of Windows forcing everyone to use the same monitor size and resolution, and forcing all "non-compliant" monitor distributors out of business. The new release could be called "Windows FU", and heralded as a "quantum leap" in screen resolution technology.
