They go into economics, market fragmentation, even newsstand locations within stores, but don't touch on the appeal of reading, and reading text-on-paper vs. letters on screens, and the educational systems...

Really? Can't be the fact that it's public education since that's what we have here and the opposite can be said to be happening.

Actually don't most countries with well-supported public education have better rates of literacy and higher educational levels than those that cut public spending and reserve education to the private sector?
