Can fighter jets hurt your ears?

They're doing a show with a bunch of fighter jets flying low on the beach that I could care less about, but I was sitting outside awhile ago when they did a pass and now my left ear is still killing me. That shit was the loudest I've ever experienced... the Blue Angels shows that used to take place over my house in Annapolis, MD were nothing compared to this noise.

Is it possible for noise to cause ear pain and then go away? I tried Google but it all talked about when you're in a jet, not on the ground.

I spent some time working on a Naval base flightline, and even with hearing protection I think my hearing is permanently damaged. But that could also be attributed to heavy metal concerts and shooting guns with no ear muffs.

I remember being accidentally too close to an sr71 taking off, and I literally ran for cover because it was so fucking loud. I though my body was going to vibrate into jelly.

You know that ringing in your ears? That 'eeeeeeeeee'? That's the sound of the ear cells dying, like their swan song. Once it's gone you'll never hear that frequency again. Enjoy it while it lasts.

Can a fighter jet hurt your ear? That's a dumb question.

Actually, so do I, I know what causes it, but I love my music. Music is my addiction, I wish I could stop myself

I had no ringing or anything. Just a sharp pain in my eardrum. It subsided after an hour and a half though. Never felt like anything before it ... have had ringing of the ears plenty of times but this was different.

Those fuckers were loud.

I have the same thing. I always wondered if I was the only one. Now I feel better!

I used to think that the room sounded like that, I quite liked it, when I found out the reality it became less enjoyable

I know I've damaged my hearing over the years, but when I get stoned my favorite thing is to put on some noise cancelling headphones and listen to metal at full volume. That can't be helping any.

Headphones for me too, though I wear them all day as I work. The ringing wasn't too bad until I started working at home and listening to music all day

Make an appointment with your ENT.
More than likely full of earwax, dirt etc. He will scrape and suck out with a vacuum pump.
I though I had Tinitus about ten yrs ago but turns out just full of earwax and dirt all packed in and caused ringing and also at its worst the ability to think clearly.

Now about once a year I get both cleaned out as they don't discharge as they should, old age or something.

Noise - loud noises (such as gun shots, firecrackers, explosions and rock concerts), particularly prolonged exposure either in the workplace or recreationally, can damage the delicate mechanisms inside the ear. If you are standing next to someone, yet have to shout to be heard, you can be sure that the noise is loud enough to be damaging your ears. You can protect your hearing by reducing your exposure to loud noise or wearing suitable protection such as ear muffs or ear plugs.
Might be worth seeing an ear clinic to be sure you haven't suffered some damage to your hearing. There's good reason workmen wear ear muffs.

The threshold of pain is about 125db.
140db will damage your hearing with brief exposure. So for BRIEF exposure it can hurt, but not do any damage.

140db, the damage threshold, is about 100 feet from a jet. You were probably at least a thousand feet away, so you're probably okay.

That assumes you heard engine noise, not the CRACK of a sonic boom from a jet going supersonic. A sonic boom can reach 200db.

I know I have lost atleast 60% hearing in my right ear and about 25% in my left ear from being stupid and having a 150+db stereo system in my vehicles. That and shooting guns with no muffs/plugs in when I was a kid. I will have ringing atleast once a day or so sometimes its different tones and then goes away. Having 6-7 concussions doesn't help either LOL If only I would of known that hearing in your 30's-40's+ is important

And that is exactly why its illegal to go supersonic over the USA, with the exceptions of Edwards AFB and White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico.

I have that tinnitus
God it's fucking awful
I hear ringing 24/7 all of the time never fucking stops
There is a frequency therapy you can try if you have that- it I guess matches the frequency you're not hearing that you hear or something

Yes, if she makes your ears pop like a plane cabin does.

That's actually where I am, too ... nobody has heard of it though and since it's an island within FTL, I just go with FTL.

Seems like they were making the return trip south over us. They were flying low and making loops, with the south trip slightly inland.

All weekend? I read something the other day and expected it for only one day. FML. It's even loud as shit indoors.
