Just did the math and it is $6.8/gallon in Brazil. Almost no one runs on gasoline as everyone uses ethanol or natural gas.

I think a lot of other countries fail to realize is that Americans typically have to drive MUCH further compared to Europe where everything is much closer. Public transportation is also a much better, cheaper and effective alternative. Hell, it takes me 2 miles just to get out of my neighborhood, no less actually go somewhere.

Sure, this is true. And topping it off with mostly 6 or 8 cylinder monster trucks the discount the US gets when importing oil is quite big. There is no denying that "buying more gives better discount".

When I live in Los Angeles I do drive longer to get to anywhere - most US cities failed miserably when it comes to public transport - it is a shame, but it is what it is...

I just drove from LA to Sacramento this weekend, paying $4.50 a gallon at the pump. It is what it is.

starts off at a whopping $49 900 price tag (after $7000 government rebate!)

That's brilliant.. you've just bought a vehicle worth 20k to save 13k (tops) over the next 5 years in gas at an amazing price tag of 50 g's. That only puts you at a -17k overall!

I have read on numerous BMW forums about the octane points of 87 vs others. The deal is you will loose some power and some of the mileage ..but, when the costs are .40 cents per gallon difference from 87 to 93 I can forgo 5% of the power and 5% of the mileage with a 20 gallon tank to fill.

Also this version of my X5 is the 3.0 ... I have had a 4.4 (8cyl) and two 3.0's now (6 cyl)

This is my 3rd X5 and no issues with engine wear, tear or knocking from lower octane gas.

No performance issues when I have had my X5's to the dealer for their inspections/check ups from using 87...

Just that the e83 engine burns a quart of oil every 900 miles like clockwork ... thats my only gripe about this particular car.
