    Buying online to avoid state sales tax

    I was shopping for a new lawn mower last week and called a couple of online sources. Both out-of-state places I called pushed avoiding sales tax,hard. I ended up buying the lawn mower locally,and did pay the sales tax.

    You have to wonder why the feds haven't come up with a way to collect on all internet purchases. The amount of tax being lost has to be very signifcant.

      You haven't been audited by your state yet. I know people that have and paid dearly.

      You are obligated to pay sales tax to the state you live in when it is not collected by an out of state vendor.

                  slowly but surely this will go away as more states are broke now and brick & mortar retail stores pushing for it as well as they can't compete.

                      the problem is that you have different sales taxes per state and that prices are always displayed without them - pretty confusing for visiting foreigners like me btw

                      over here in all countries VAT is the same at least for each country and prices must be displayed including VAT. and the vendor is responsible for forwarding it to the government - no matter if online or offline. ask AFF

                                  THe operative words in the title are STATE SALES TAX. Clearly, the states will never find a solution. If the federal government, especially this current federal government really wants to raise money they will have to be involved,and implement real state by state compliance.

                                              3 simple reasons:

                                              1) Announcing they are in favor of 'taxing the Internet' (as the media would call it) is reelection campaign suicide.

                                              2) They are being handed a ton of money from the companies and investors directly benefiting from the sales tax hole.

                                              3) They want to be reelected officials with wealthy backers more than they want to be statesmen.


                                              It really is that simple and the same three reasons can be applied to nearly every problem facing out country. One day our country will realize that citizens united, four year long campaigns for election, media consolidation and deregulation are horrifically bad for the long term growth, health and security of our nation. The day we have publicly funded elections, term limits, serious laws against revolving door lobbyist employment...and a tiny handful of oligarchs no longer own our media or our Democracy - then and only then will the system start to correct itself.

                                              Hopefully that happens before we completely collapse and have our nation's wealth extracted by global corps and investors with zero loyalty to their 'host' country. I seriously doubt people will wise up in time. The taibi article on Romney for rolling stone is a very worthwhile one because it makes the point that it's not rich vs poor, it's nationalist vs post-nationalist that matters right now. If people don't get their act together, I'll have roughly ten years of posts on several sites that amount to a mammoth amount of 'I told you so' but that would be the most hollow silver lining ever...

                                                          I never understood why they do not include tax in the final price like most of the countries do. Its just adds extra confusion for the people. Not to mention situations when you see price of lets say 17.87$ and you have in your pocket 18.50$ and you are not sure if that will be enough for your purchase or not. I mean its just plain stupid.

                                                                  If you buy out of State and do not pay that states sales tax, then you must pay your own states taxes. Sometimes for business stuff if you do pay that states tax, you still might have to pay a small additional professional something tax in your own state.

                                                                  They are pushing for all online places to charge sales tax. A few places just went on ahead and started doing it before it becomes law, and it will...

In one county here it has an additional 1% tax higher for some BS. Some chain stores to get build charge an additional tax to pay off the store being built.

                                                                      So it is all Hidden Fees... I know people that will drive 20 miles to go to the 1% lower sales tax to buy $20 in clothes, HAHA the gas they waste!

Like we want in the county I live in something for the schools, so they vote and raise just our county's tax 1 penny for like 3 years, to pay for that project?

                                                                                          This way another county isn't paying for what our county wants!
