It's part of the celebrity cycle...
she's bottomed out, so now she goes on SNL and pokes fun at herself and it shows "look at me, I can laugh at myself". Then she does the serious Oscar-type movie role in a small indy flick, gets critical acclaim and is suddenly back on the A-list again.
I saw a few of their skits on some talk shows and it reminded me of when your school would have a talent show and the teachers would perform some "comedy" act and it made everyone groan and cringe.
“If you can convince the lowest white man he’s better than the best colored man, he won’t notice you’re picking his pocket. Hell, give him somebody to look down on, and he’ll empty his pockets for you.”
