Replacing ATI gfx card with Nvidia - Do I need to delete the ATI drivers before new install?

Do I need to delete the old drivers BEFORE I install the new gfx card and new drivers, or does it matter?

What's the protocol for this?

Thanks.

You don't need to remove old card at all. Windows will read your mind while you are clicking mouse and precisely know which one you want to use as primary (it is just important to have wired and not wireless mouse so take care of that). I am not sure does this feature work with windows updates older then 15 September 2011, but someone here will know, for sure.

No,but do it anyway because no points to occupy space for nothing.Plus ati drivers are crap so they could cause problems.

1. uninstall ati drivers
2. remove ati card
3. install nvidia card
4. install nvidia drivers

i think that's the correct procedure

I have done it in XP with no issues, no need to install old drivers but if it makes you feel better do it.

I cannot imagine Win7 would not be able to tell there is a new card installed.

Do Nvidia cards still have problems reading .mov files?
I had an Nvidea gforce something or other i think at my job and every time I went to play a .mov it would crash.

I googled it and they basically said you're fucked lmao. Was a little while ago so I assume it has been fixed but who knows. It was nuts, they were telling ppl to go complain to apple lmao. Got sick of it eventually and got a radeon hd card.

http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?showtopic=37997&st=0 thats an old post but an example of what I am talking about.

It should have been addressed by now but maybe try playing some mov files after the install.

You don't need to uninstall the drivers if you don't want to but no reason to keep it there.
Device manager ftw.

Best of luck with it.

You should remove the drivers to be safe. Was just reading about some people who were having issues with frame rates on games after upgrading cards and not removing the old drivers ended up being the cause.

you do not have to remove ati drivers at all all...
and you can do it anytime later..

I have both ati and nvidia cards running in my computer and both drivers installed without any problems...

Geforce GTX 570

I have it in but having problems with it. My encoder won't recognize CUDA, which is the only reason I got it. Gonna be one of those nights.

Have one in another machine and it will encode 2x faster than the ATI so wanted to get the same card in my other machine. Failing so far.

any particular reason you went with nVidia? ATI has some awesome and much faster cards right now.

BTW, nVidia is releasing a totally next line of cards very soon - Kepler
maybe you should have waited for that.

To use CUDA when I render video. Drastically speeds up rendering.

Anything that is too top of the line we have to order from the USA and 1) it takes a while to get here. 2) Import tax makes it a lot more expensive. 3) Flip a coin because it may not make it. 4) Thai customs are a bunch of crooks who will literally hijack shit and hold it for ransom sometimes.
