You can also use some php functions that make good use of gd. I think there are a couple of objects and sniplets in google code making use of gd for the same stuff.
Personally I prefer ImageMagick because it's faster than php.

I'm sure he knows how to do it automatically, he wrote a tube script

He's after how much to pay someone to manually make some really nice thumbs

to get good results you need a very high quality video to grab still frames from - can't perform miracles on a shitty compressed frame.

Yes, true, but i am not expecting any wonders but just some enhancements so the thumbs look better than what GD does.
The videos are pretty ok quality, should be able to crop some good thumbs from them, but i want the human touch..

Thanks, but i am looking for the human touch here, humans can just do this better because thumb quality generated by croppers vary, and a human can adjust quality much more accurate.

Your best option is to use ffmpeg to do that.

ffmpeg -i video.mpg image%d.jpg

I know there is a setting to add sharpness and brightness. You could have this done in a couple of minutes using ffmpeg.
