Chinese company may take iPad core out of Apple

A Chinese company seeks to ban iPad exports from China, accusing Apple Inc. of violating its rights to the iPad name. This action enables local authorities to seize the gadgets.

haProview Technology is petitioning Chinese Customs to block all import and exports of Apple iPads.

There have been media reports that authorities in several Chinese cities have already ordered retailers to stop selling iPads because of the dispute.

On Monday investigators in Shijiazhuang, southwest of Beijing, started seizing iPads at the request of a Chinese owner of the trademark.

The row comes as a blow to Apple which is preparing to unveil its third version of the iPad tablet in early March.

However big and important for Apple the Chinese market might be, practically all the company?s products are produced in China, making the multinational a hostage of legal proceedings in the country.

Proview Technology?s lawyers are seeking up to 10 billion yuan ($1.6 billion) as compensation for trademark infringement. They say Apple Inc is not directly in talks with Proview to settle the case.

Late last year Apple lost a case to Proview Technology in a Shijiazhuang court, which named Proview the owner of iPad trademark.

A court in Hong Kong, on the other hand, sided with Apple in a similar case.

You know what would be cool is if Apple started looking at finding ways to build its products in the US and Canada. Workers are dying over in China and considering all the people out of work in the US, and how much money Apple now has and especially at how much attention all 3 issues are now getting in the media, maybe its time Apple started opening up a few plants.

pretty big screw up on behalf of apple if you ask me.

the chinese being the chinese, i imagine they will award their own somehow state owned company $1.2B from an american held company. Being as big as Apple, you have a big target on your back... i guess the cheap labor has its drawbacks.

It would push the price up of thier products if they used US or Candian workers.

disagree. its not like apple products are cheaper because they are made in china. Numerous tech companies manufacture in china & dont charge apples premium prices.

Instead, apple would be forced to eat some of their oil company-like profits, as their pricing cannot be any higher.

i hope china really fucks them over, just to deliver karma for choosing slaves to make their products.

It's not just the cost of labour but has a lot to do with enviromental rules and other regulations.

Haha they took a page out of Apple's playbook getting tablets banned based on silly IP claims. Apple has been blocking sales of Android tablets in Europe by claiming a patent on the rectangle shape with rounded corners. (Basically, anyway.) They are claiming that other tablets shouldn't be allowed to resemble the general size and shape of theirs.) Never mind movies from the 1970s show that shape, so they did not invent it.
