Digital Camera Lense Advice - GoFuckYourself.com

I'm new to the world of digital photography but have settled on buying the Nikon D100. Can any of you more experiance guys give me some advice about lenses?

It will be for web content so I don't really want to spend more than I have to but don't mind paying a few more quid for a better lense.

Leave Nikon .. buy Canon D60 .. This is a kicking ass camera PLUS if you are going to make video then you will able to buy Canon XL1S which is VERY good camera and you will able to use on it photo lens!!!

Regarding the lens.. whatever you buy at the end Nikon or Canon go for 2.8 lens with 16-35 mm and 4.0 70-200 .. if you want more then also buy 28-70 2.8 .

But again think twice about Canon.

yup, i just shot with the d100 last week and wasnt too happy with it. the focus seemed wierd and I was even using a canon lens.

I ordered the Canon D60 3 days ago!!!!

I'm confused - you used a Canon lens on a D100 camera? Hmmmm, no wonder the focus was off

We use the Nikon D100 here at Oliver Klozov Studios and couldn't be happier with the camera or the results that we are getting from the camera. If you have the money for a Nikon Lens, I would say go with the 35-70 (2.8) or the 80-200 (2.8) - they are pretty expensive lenses but if you want the best - that's what you get. A step down in price (but not necessarily quality if the images will only be used on the net) is the Tamron 28-105 (2.8). I used to use this lens when I shot for David Lace and it is one kick-ass lens. No, it's not a Nikon lens, but for the internet - no one will ever be able to tell

Nikon its defintely cool camera, but they dont have Camcoders..
Canon made a great combination and you can save alot of money on lens.
2.8 lens are expenxive and cost around 2k$ each.

I think Diz and Dean have shown you what you should buy.

You can spend $20K on a camera body, but put a $200 lens on the front and you have a $200 camera picture.

If you have space to work in go for a fixed pro lens, cost around $1,000 or maybe less. You can buy an "Amateur" fixed lens for less. If you want the flexibility of zoom and digital, plus do not know what you are doing with lighting, go for a professional zoom lens, Nikon make a good 28-80 which I think in the US is around $1,500. But I could be wrong.

The results will be amazing and you will seperate your pictures from every other guy trying to do it with a $600 camera/lens.

The problem with digital is colour and contrast. With a cheap zoom lens as you zoom in and out the aperture changes and at wide angle you are letting more light into the camera than is actually hitting the model. This is called "Flare" and results in a picture looking out of focus and "Flat"

To measure the problem buy a light metre that records direct and reflected light.

Buying a professional lens will help elliminate this.

Nikkon lenses and Canon are about the same in quality, but I think Nikon auto focus is better.

We own a Nikon D1X, EOS1, 3, 5 and some 600s. Plus 2 Canon A1s the best camera of it's day.

also note that the new Canon and Nikon Dig Cameras have a wider aspect ratio than the regular 35mm film versions that most of the lenses are designed for. This means that the lens will have a narrower view on a digital body than on a film body.

Just something to consider when buying lenses.

I agree about going with Canon. But, one point, while you can use the still lenses on an XL1s, it requires an adaptor....and there is a multiplier factor of x7, in other words it becomes such a super telephoto lense, it would only be good for shooting things from like a mile away.

Buy the best zoom lens in the 28-80 range. Go for the fastest lens you can afford, 2.8 is what I use. And make sure you get a lense that is multicoated to reduce glare, very important for digital.

Finally, buy a b+w neutral filter to protect the investment. Do NOT buy a thousand dollar lens and then a fifteen dollar cheapo filter for it.

The D100 is a great camera. Ignore all those trying to get you to buy something else. Get the D100.

If you're only going to have 1 lens to begin with I recommend the Nikkor 24-120mm f/3.5-5.6D IF Autofocus Lens. I shoot 99.9% of my content with this lens. You can buy it at http://www.bhphotovideo.com . Do a search for that lens.

Thanks guys, there's alot of info there.

It has always been between the Canon D60 and Nikon D100, it took me ages to decide on the Nikon so I think I'm still going to go for that, although I do already own the Canon DV XL1.

Thanks Dean from Oliver Klozov, I've always been really impressed with the pics you guys put out. When I get the Nikon no doubt I'll be bugging you wondering why mine don't look as good as yours ;-)

One last question, I'm in the UK and from what I can tell with the exchange rate and everything I could get the Nikon for about £500/$700 cheaper if I bought it from a US site. Is there any reason I shouldn't buy from the US with regards to adaptability, power supply etc?
