Travelling South America

OK we are Aussie so have never been to the America's, but will be spending 3 months over there from 2 weeks time onwards.

Aside from the standard "be careful of theives/rip offs" want members advice on:

LA
Utila (Honduras)
Colombia
Ecuador/Galapagos
Peru
Bolivia
Buenos Aries


That is where we will be visitng (about 2 weeks in each, more in Ecuador), so if anyone has 'must see' reco's would like to hear them

Looks like a great hit list of places to visit. Colombia is one of my favorite countries. What cities are you planning to visit? Venezuela has some amazing things as well. You'll be close and Angel Falls is worth a visit, highest waterfall in the world.

Only real advice is to be careful if you're doing land travel in the mountains. Good chance you may encounter some para military groups depending on where you are. We were taken off a bus at gunpoint once. Pretty terrifying.

Sounds like a dream trip. I would like to see Costa Rica as well though, I think it beat Australia this year as the best place in the world to live.

Going to Medellin and Bogota in Colombia, probably all we will have time for, but i have heard amazing things about Cartagena. Going to Iguazu Falls, so giving Angel Falls a miss this time.

Yeh the US gov/airport system doesn't really cater towards tourists. Very isolationist imo, i mean even refusing people with a low level conviction is stupid if you ask me, especially when you are in a slow economy in which tourist dollars can help

IMHO, Bogota is a waste of time. Not much to see or do. Lots of brown apartment/condo buildings. All I remember was a couple big strip clubs/brothels downtown and lots of cold rain.

Medellin is awesome. It sits in a valley surrounded by mountains on three sides. Go up to the little village (can't remember the name, but everyone knows it - like a small town in Colombia inside Medellin - touristy but cool to see), and you can look down on the city and see airplanes flying into the middle of town - looks crazy from up there.

In Medellin, take the cable car to the very top of the mountain. You'll pass above some of worst, most dangerous slums in the world. The view from the top is amazing. You can ride the metro to the cable car starting point - very easy to get around.

Cartagena is also a blast. Great beaches. If you are there in the summer, check out Hollywood Beach - all the hot bar hooks go there in the daytime. Check out the walled city - the old Spanish fortified town. Great restaurants and bars. Also check out the huge old Spanish fort in the middle of town.

Cali is a blast if you like to party. I mean, really party. Having beers in a small hidden club one night, and the waiter brought over a small silver tray of coke. For free. I guess they wanted to keep us there drinking all night

I really would pass on Bogota, unless you need to be there for business or something.

-Machu Picchu of course, hang out in Cusco.

Where is that?

Manuel Antonio National Park, just south of Quepos. About two and a half hours drive from Jaco. Beautiful place, and has tons of wildlife if you are into shooting moneys, apes, sloths and many other critters. It's a great day trip. I walked the whole park, with stopping for photos, etc, in about 6 hours.

One tip - when you walk down to the beach, you'll see a sign for a mountain trial that leads to the "hidden cove" (first picture). I took that path. It's a bitch! About 90 minutes in the rainforest going up, down and sideways. If you go straight at that sign, instead, it's an easy walk along the beach - maybe 15 minutes

As long as you are there, take a taxi downtown and check out The Pool and The Castle - two big nightclub/brothels. On-site rooms and all that. Lots of gorgeous girls. Do be careful downtown - go straight to the club, exit taxi, enter club.

My friend and I decided to walk around downtown. In retrospect it was a bad idea. Very rough, lots of nut case homeless people, and very scary ladyboys walking around. Did not feel comfortable at all, and was downright scared at one point. Though we here going to get mugged by three homeless guys, but made a lot of direct eye contact to show them I was aware, and kept moving into well-lighted areas with people until they stopped tracking us.

One afternoon in Bogota is enough. Go in, go to the top of the mountain (Monserrate) to see the city at sunset, then leave the city.

I know several people to be robbed in the daytime in Bogota walking just outside of their hotels, right in front of everyone. Also happened to my Colombian friend (around 10pm) as well as he walked out about 3 minutes before us. By the time we walked out, he caught him down the street and was beating the shit out of the guy on the sidewalk. We all jumped his ass then. Then the police came and beat his ass some more with their clubs, then held him for my friend to hit some more. Then they literally tossed his badly beaten body in the back of their truck to take him away. 100% Colombian street justice.

We shot in Bogota once, have no desire to go back unless it's transit through the airport. So many better places in Colombia.
