Sever Question - Especially Unmetered !

OK bit of a NOOB when it comes to servers... but keep seeing this term "unmetered" what exactly does that mean, unmetered bandwidth ?

I currently use a managed server... and the bandwidth is killing us ! I am thinking we probably should move one or two things onto a unmanaged server to reduce the hit on the main server...

Can anyone tell me info on this ? And recommend good servers we can look at that dont cost a fortune...

first, you and an unmanaged server = DISASTER

bandwidth is dirt cheap these days, if you're getting gouged on bandwidth charges you need a new host.

do you know how much you're being charged for bandwidth? most plans allow you a certain amount of bandwidth and if you go over that bandwidth they charge you overage fees.

I moved my sites to Vacares Hosting. I've saved money, my hair is thicker, lost some weight too! Thanks Sly!

Unmetered means a set amount per second. (example 10 mbps)

Metered means a set amount of transfer a month. (3.25 TB per month)

I used these two numbers because they are essentially the same amount of traffic. To know what raped is we would all need to know what you are paying.

Since my old server bill was in the high $xx,xxx range a month and I thought it was fair.

I could give two shits wether you read this sig or not.

Hey...

Ok well a little more about our situation...

Firstly I dont want to move from our main servers, the company have been very good to us and very patient when we went through a particually bad time...

But with the current package we have we are encountering a large overage... I know most of it comes from our affiliate stuff... yes I run paysites too for those who dont know lol...

I am hearing all sorts of options like 100,000 GB bandwidth packages... we currently get 3200 GB... so a bit of a difference...

So yeah I am going to speak to our current hosts, and then look at the best options...

Noways you must use A LOT of bw if it's gonna kill you. And if you're doing that much bw you should be making money.

Hey shoot me an e-mail.

If you're getting that much traffic you are going to need MySQL and Apache/Nginx optimizations and may even increase conversions with a low cost CDN solution.

Well you'd think so wouldnt you FAIL...

The package we have as been ajusted now to give us 3200 GB, we was only getting 600 GB !

Some people have said we can get 100,000 GB for a couple hundread bucks... so I guess if that's true then we been missing out...

Also Mutt, Eric who is one of my partners is a ex server guy... so having a unmanaged server would not be such a disaster after all

What are you being charged for over usage?

With unmetered you can utilize the full capacity you buy (10, 50, 100, 400, 1000 Mbps etc) but you loose the option to burst, you can't peak. So for tubes it makes sense to go unmetered, for a paysite not so much as you want your site to be fast at all times. You can choose to seperate your content downloads from the website and put that on a seperate unmetered server.

Bandwidth is dirt cheap these days, a server with 100 mbps unmetered is like a few hundred bucks a month

We're paying $300 for our current managed server... but this includes catching up with some money we owe... which I have no issues with. But it would be nice not to incur any more overages...

Off the top of my head not too sure... but it's a fair bit...

People are saying the 3500-4000 GB's we're using is pretty low bandwidth wise, but then we aint a big playa

People are saying some providers offer 100,00 GB packages for a few hundread dollars which seems crazy as thats 30 times what we get now... !

You don't have to use a lot of bandwidth to make money so that doesn't say much :-)

Let me know when you find out what you pay for overusage, if you don't want to share that with the public you can also drop me an email or hit me on icq and I will tell you if that is a fair price.

The whole idea normally behind overusage fees is that you want people to upgrade their basic package, any proper host should warn you about upcoming overusage and ask to upgrade your package before you get hit with overusage fees. That way you can save a lot of money.
