Neil Young on the Internet and Music: PIRACY IS THE NEW RADIO

Does he have a point? Is it just a matter of finding a better delivery system and ditching the old dinosaur/hard media-based model?

Piracy is not new. And it's not anything like radio.

Okay, did not read it, probably will not . . . but if an artist wants to put his stuff out there to be stolen, more power to him. The artist should have a say in the matter though. All these people that say "steal my stuff" speak for themselves. No one else. $.02

Radio was a tease for the real product. Digital music is the real product. I think Mr. Young would feel differently if he hadn't banked 10's of millions with recorded sales.

On the music quality comments -- I don't think a major percentage of people can tell the difference between vinyl and an MP3 at its highest quality.

Radio quality recorded to tape vs vinyl or pre-recorded tape = major difference in sound. Digital, you have a good point.

I probably couldnt tell the difference, but if he's correct in what he's saying, there is a long way to go
"He says that your average MP3 file only contains about five percent of the audio from an original recording and he says Apple Lossless only offers "10.3 percent."

Ok so he's obviously downloaded shit copies of songs from the internet.

On the distribution side, Young isn't particularly concerned with the effects of piracy on artists, he's more concerned that the files that are being shared are of such low quality:

Up to the artist / producer / copyright holder.

Yea, you can bet your ass if he was still struggling to pay the bills he would be signing a different tune.

The loss of audio quality started when they stopped recording on tape. Now with MP3 and even FLAC files, it's just not the same as a good old analog recording on vinyl. Generations of people have lost how amazing music can really sound.

It's all irrelevant. What matters is the last thing the sound waves go through, your ears, then the surroundings, then the speakers, then the pick up, then the recording.

Someone walking along a crowded busy street listening to his ipod on those ear plug things has got as much chance of hearing anything of quality as I have of getting younger.

Niel Young can give away his music, house, wife and dog for free if he wishes. I choose not to do the same with my content. With Baddog on this one.

edit; 99% of what most kids listen to is crap to start off with. LOL

A lot of opportunists are realizing making a pro piracy announcement can give you a burst of street cred and popularity, no different from Paulo Coelho last week

paulo coelho was sharing his stuff since he started when his book only had a print run of 900 copies.

He gave back the advance and went into debt writing his second book when the publisher objected to him sharing.

Paulo Coelho has "street cred" because he has been pro sharing even when it was not popular.

He proved the effectiveness of sharing as a marketing tools.

The only difference between the radio and piracy is the tiny insignificant liciencing fee that the artist get after the record companies take their "rightful share"

If you an independent artist you can make that back easy.
