Why do they still drop off phonebooks at your front door?

This afternoon I hear a thud on front of my door. I go look and there are two big ass phone books. What a waste on two counts first I dont have a land line and secondly I got the fucking internet.
Its like what a waste on so many levels.

I'm glad they do, got mine yesterday. I still use it, prefer it over the internet. Easier to just thumb through it, especially if you don't specifically know the exact listing you are looking for.

I always feel bad, we get two different companies dropping off their version of the phone book and all that paper goes right into the recycle bin. I always kept one around but it was so many years since I used one I finally just stopped bothering.

They still do quite well selling advertising iniside the phonebook as well as better placement, company logo and so forth to the companies being listed, so it's worht all the cost to print it and ditribute it many times over.

I get them every couple of years. Like others I pick them up off the porch and put them right in the recycle can. The last time I think they knew the fate of the books because they actually set them on top of the recycle can which happened to be sitting next to my porch that day.

                    My pet peeve

Sometimes they are required by state utility commissions for people without Internet service.
I'm glad they do. Yellowpages.com is becoming useless.

The people lookup section never seems to find anyone lately, but directs me to Intelus, which will give me the information for money.
By the way, Intelus will keep on reporting a person, at a phone number years after a new person has that number, if the new person has an unpublished number. Never have that problem with a phone book, when they give up the number, they aren't there next year.
Also, if it's a difficult to spell name or the number is in the name of a family member, looking by the address or close spellings sometimes gives you the answer.

As for the yellow page part, I've looked for businesses I know exist, without any success on yellow pages.com AKA yp.com. One of which has a big ad in the paper version, but didn't exist online. Hello ATT, anybody listening?
Went to look something up the other night, and got the message of some problem on their end check back later. I need results now.
Then I went to check on restaurants in an urban zip code. Results 2200 results at 30 per page. The 1st 100 were not in that zip, some were 20 miles away, other side of town. 2200?!? might as well just scan the paper version, at least they are by types so I could just to the few types my guests would eat.

I have no doubt because the cost has to be large to put it out on every door step. Its just such an old technology. They got an app at yp.com that is very cool. Its just funny I remember when they spoke about the paperless society that's what originally sparked the parc project. Zerox was afraid no more paper, no more copiers, no more Zerox. All these years later and we are not that much closer to that.

It is a nice neat way of storing paper for winter. Drop a fire lighter in some YP paper and you are set for a nice evening of crackling burning timber.

But what do you expect from a company that sends me ads to buy Uverse when it's not on my street or buy some crappy phone a week after I bought an iPhone??

If I see them in my hood I'll try and stop them from dropping it off on my door. They should have a "do not deliver" list for yellow pages books. then a few weeks later I get another one from AT&T.

A large number still use the yellow pages to find local businesses -- the rest find the books handy for doorstops, kindling, etc. .
