    How long does a domain name stay in redemption period for

    The whois record says the name is in redemption period but the whois owner is got it listed as private so i cant even see who owns the name and the domain name itself does not load

    30 days I think, but it may vary. I think during this period the current domain owner (who it's possible may still be contactable through the privacy address) can still re-register it. Again, that may vary between registrars. Just check the site of the registrar in question for their rules.

    Your chances of getting the name even when it drops are pretty much zero (unless it's a crap name with no traffic or backlinks), unless you use some kind of automated system to snap it up. Even then it's not guaranteed.
