urls-with-hyphens-in-them-yay-or-nay?

I have had some decent results with them in the past, but I'm wondering what the general GFY consensus on domains that use hypens.

Discuss.

Hyphens do not hurt your rankings... well, at least from my experience.

I only use hyphens when absolutely necassary. Sometimes it can't be helped, and sometimes, depending on the name of the site, it may actually help surfers remember the URL better. Again, depending.

Generally i don't like 'em. LOL

Agreed. Avoid them when possible, however buy them when there is no alternative. I generally use SEO for hyphenated domains. I never seek for people to remember them. It's all SE driven.

I already see a few more pros than cons to hyphens.

I didn't know about the SE relevance to be honest, and the hyphenated domains that I do own pay for themselves and much more. So I think I can justify buying more of them.

When registering a domain name: without hyphen
When creating folders, files etc on the actual domain: with hyphen

If you're going for short 4-8 character domain names that are easy to remember and maybe get a few type-ins avoid them.

If you're going for SEO ranking using keyword-keyword or keyword-keyword-keyword then hyphens are fine.

Hyphens are interpreted as spaces. When you are naming your folders and file names avoid using underscores and use hyphens instead.

I don't like hyphen sin the domain name because they are looking so spammy. I would only use if there is no other way or it's a great domain. In URL structure and image naming hyphens are great to separate words.
