Agreed. Avoid them when possible, however buy them when there is no alternative. I generally use SEO for hyphenated domains. I never seek for people to remember them. It's all SE driven.
I already see a few more pros than cons to hyphens.
I didn't know about the SE relevance to be honest, and the hyphenated domains that I do own pay for themselves and much more. So I think I can justify buying more of them.
I don't like hyphen sin the domain name because they are looking so spammy. I would only use if there is no other way or it's a great domain. In URL structure and image naming hyphens are great to separate words.
