Was very nice, in the 70s... nowadays, forget it.
Sea is horribly polluted, guys are wanking off looking at your girlfriend, it's too hot, and too touristic, in fact it's not like India at all, except for the cows on the beaches.
Better alternatives during winter months: Cape Town, Perth, Santiago, Buenos AiresComment

Not planning on staying in Goa the entire trip, so I'm sure I'll be able to see the real "India"Was very nice, in the 70s... nowadays, forget it.

This is not the type of trip I was planning for, I am going solo as a backpacker to enjoy some new experiences and visit beautiful places, live the way I would never live and see what other cultures have to offer, not staying at a fancy hotel getting massages away from local life. I want experience a very high contrast to the way I live my life right now, only if just for a little while

If that is a new experience for you, I'm sure you will love it.
The beaches are beautiful. But it isn't a way to see other cultures and have new experiences.
Caveat: I've not been for 8 years.Comment

[QUOTE=Jesus H Christ;18668616]
wow this looks really cool, where do I rent those? any places you recommend visiting? also how do I pick up the places to stop? I don't really have plans, I figured when I land there I see what other people are up to and go from there.Anyway, I'd highly suggest renting a houseboat with (new) friends and cruise down Siolim river for a couple days. All you do eat, stop in little village ports, get high, and sleep good as the houseboats are all air conditioned. Make sure you pick the places to stop of you'll pay much more for things as the boat operator gets a kickback. In short, always lead and let them follow.

isn't this a recipe to getting yourself ripped off, losing your passport or valuables, etc? isn't it wiser on a trip to a faraway country to stay sober and keep your wits?Originally posted by Jesus H Christ...
Finally, most port village Indians will try to sell you hash. As your attorney I highly recommend this if it's mixed with opium. Nothing is better for a true traveler then floating down an Indian river as if you went back in time a 1000 years, baked on hash, full from great food, sliding into your third Scotch, Goan trance music, as you catch the sunset.

This Review Is Fucking Awesome!Originally posted by Jesus H ChristHere is the biggest tip when in GOA. Places, or the "cool" places change way too often and it really depends on what you truly want and the time of year. WTS, my tip is find out where the Israelis or Hungarians are hanging out. You are guaranteed a great/safe time and if you hear a lot of Russian, you're in the wrong place.
When it comes to renting a houseboat there are many places to chose from and they'll most likely find you first as they flyer the crap out of you. Before your rent, tip the guy a few dollars and tell him you'll wait a day or two. This way he'll book your voyage with women, due to you being a lone traveler.
Anyway, depending on your budget, take your time and set it up correctly. View your house boat first, and only pay when you board. Some are old school Goan as others have big screen TV's and air conditioners. You'll want the air conditioned one because it keeps the bugs away when you sleep.
Also, you basically float down the river so if you see a riverside village that looks interesting, just tell them to pull over. All meals are provided and they're huge portions and made fresh when you want. Just be careful when you're eating freshwater crabs or the huge freshwater sweet prawns because odds are, you might be eating a dead Indian by proxy. I thought they were delicious!

I'm not a big fan of opium, not a fan at all actually, but I do expect to taste some very good Charas. Finally, most port village Indians will try to sell you hash. That small post was one of the most to the point informative posts I've read in a long time. But I'd expect nothing less from Jesus.Originally posted by Jesus H ChristWrote a detailed post about GOA months back, too lazy to look it up. Hard to understand what you're looking for with little information provided. Anyway, I preferred GOA over the rest of India because you're able to check into a verity of nice hotels to recover.
Plus, due to GOA being a former Portuguese colony the variety of meat protean based foods are just incredible. If you get outside of the major tourist traps, head south and you'll have some of the best and seafood of your life. It's cheap, fresh and simply delicious, especially the real grilled tiger prawns as this is coming from a guy who deals/dealt in the seafood business.
Anyway, I'd highly suggest renting a houseboat with (new) friends and cruise down Siolim river for a couple days. All you do eat, stop in little village ports, get high, and sleep good as the houseboats are all air conditioned. Make sure you pick the places to stop of you'll pay much more for things as the boat operator gets a kickback. In short, always lead and let them follow.

Indian people are the most hospitable on the planet to a fault, as the further you go south the more "real" they become as things get cheaper. Again, compared to the rest of India the people in GOA are much more relaxed and not as much poverty stricken comparatively. Your time means absolutely nothing to them and the true core to everything is your money. Due to this they will just about say/do anything to get it even if it's a lie or miss direction. They are masters at problem solving (usually created by them) as they are always the solution. With that said, it's impossible not to like them as they just grow on you.
Cons:
You're gonna get sick no matter how careful you are so stop thinking prevention and more damage control. All the food is made by hand and usually served by hand as cross contamination is normal especially, if your a vegetarian. So bring the right medication with you because nothing is worse being sick looking for it. Also, many products are bootlegged and made in a back alley somewhere so don't think it's safe because of the brand.
Have fun wishing I was you.Comment

Fuck Goa man. Its so 1998. Go to Morocco, fly in to Dar Bida (Casablanca) Take a taxi to the bus station, tell em you want to go to Kasbah Tadla, in the Middle Atlas...get there, walk into the market and tell em you are looking for the local brothel...will change you life. This is not the type of trip I was planning for, I am going solo as a backpacker to enjoy some new experiences and visit beautiful places, live the way I would never live and see what other cultures have to offer, not staying at a fancy hotel getting massages away from local life. Sounds like a dream vacation - the good way... or you mean the National Geographic way - where they show stories of westerners serving years in jail ? Or "Tabboo" - show ( again on National Geographic where they show guys who recently discovered their other preferences of sexual life...Fuck Goa man. Its so 1998. Want to live, breathe? feel free? Follow me, or follow the worthless gen to Goa living off daddy's coin.
IN all seriousness I heard Goa is more of a hassle now than before. As previous poster mentioned, scammers, pickpockets..Last edited by Captain Kawaii; 03-11-2012, 04:57 AM.Comment
