She could have included the "not good looking" because in Europe they do a lot of profiling of South American women to prevent prostitution.
Without any real facts I would have to consider the following factors. It is very difficult for South Americans to now get a visa for Spain. In many case the Schengen visa does not apply in Spain for certain countries.
Example last year my wife, who is Colombian, visited some friends in Germany, she applied for and received a 5 year multiple entry Schengen visa. This year in March we are going to Spain for 3 weeks and her European visa is not valid for entry into Spain, she has to apply for a different visa, and we have been told that it will be for the exact number of days she her tickets are for, and it will be a onetime only visa.
Too many factors to draw conclusions, but you can pretty much assume is was not because she is short.
