I have bought a lot of dot coms and other extensions for protection also over the years and they are right, if you don't somebody else will.

I would guess that the majority of registrations on anything other than .com are either defensive or speculative.

what difference does it make. Next year, ICANN will allow any company on earth to become a registrar for any domain extension. That means the number of sites that can be created under one name move from a handful to unlimited. So XXX will just blend into the crowd.

Is that true? It's about time. Eventually we will just be able to register pretty much anything we want like buy.homes, internet.advertising, etc. and the TLD will hardly matter. Only then will .com be affected IMO because it won't be a .com internet anymore.

i think it will actually make .com that much stronger. when you have dozens of websites with a particular name, my bet is that uncertain surfers will assume the .com is the legit site & the rest are just wannabes.

guaranteed that in 2 years, xxx will cost 10 bucks a year instead of 100.

All the more reason to keep it at 100. They want people who make money and drive traffic/attention using their extension not someone who can't afford them throwing up another garbage site.

one, they dont care who they sell to, only that they sell. if peeps buy just to throw up a crap site, great. not like xxx is being used to actually make sites since it sounds like 80% of sales is to mainstream brands buying protection.

two, its simple price economics. Many products roll out at premium pricing, then drop over time. This is especially true with ICANN expanding the universe of extensions to infinity. Lots more supply of available domains = drop in price.

I'm not sure ICANN would approve another adult extension except MAYBE for an adult .brand. Look how long it took them to come around and approve .xxx.

That said, the whole defensive registration angle is pretty despicable I think. It's basically saying "this domain will be worth absolutely nothing to you, but that nothing is better than the damage someone else could cause to your brand." That's not a healthy relationship to have with customers.

Yeah surely they want a mass of registrants from the start. But after things start settling I'm sure they'd rather a "big player" grab ahold of an expired premium domain than someone doing nothing with it that pays the $10/year just because they don't want to let it go yet. Look at how they're using domains like affiliates.xxx etc as their own to work with the people who own them.

If you designed an expensive car would you want a bunch have-nots who could barely afford it becoming the image of those buying it, or the people who others looks up to and who help you brand it and bring a better image to it?

i dont think ICM gives a shit about the image of their domain. They are not selling ferraris. in fact your post #1 is proof they dont even care about selling to porn producers. all they want is a sale. If they want to sell any longer then a year, the price has to compete, as they offer nothing of value for the extra price.
