Remains of 274 US troops dumped in US landfill

I love this country, but it is so f***ed up.

AFP - The US Air Force dumped the cremated, partial remains of at least 274 troops in a Virginia landfill before halting the secretive practice in 2008, the Washington Post reported Thursday.

The procedure was never formally authorized or disclosed to senior Pentagon officials, who conducted a review of the cremation policies of Dover Air Base -- the main point of entry for US war dead -- in 2008, the Post said.

Nor was the dumping ever disclosed to the families of the fallen troops, who had authorized the military to dispose of the remains in a respectful and dignified manner, the Post said, citing Air Force officials.

The newspaper quoted officials as saying that a precise count of the remains disposed of at a Virginia landfill would require searching through the records of 6,300 troops whose remains have passed through Dover since 2001.

An additional group of 1,762 remains -- which could not undergo DNA testing because they were badly damaged or burned -- were also disposed of in this manner, the Post said, citing the Air Force.

Defense officials could not immediately be reached for comment.

Last month investigators said they had found "gross mismanagement" at the US Air Force mortuary, with body parts lost and remains mishandled.

After allegations from whistle-blowers, an Air Force probe found that two "portions of the remains" of fallen troops had been lost and uncovered other problems at the morgue.

New procedures have been put in place at the mortuary and the commander at the morgue, a colonel, together with two civilian officials were disciplined over the episode but not sacked.

The Dover affair echoes a scandal that erupted last year at Arlington National Cemetery, the country's hallowed ground for war dead. Investigators there uncovered cases of misidentified remains and mismanagement.

I dont care if it was just a tiny body part they were trying to dispose, there is ZERO respect given to these people who were killed in a war, many of whom also disagreed with. Burying them "in mass" grave or a ceremony at sea, would of been fitting.

I don't understand why their families didn't arrange such a ceremony. They told the US army to "keep the remains" and are now upset about how the US army disposed these remains?

I am making some assumptions here, as I did not read other articles related to this story, so I am thinking that ...

the "remains" where parts, and not an entire body, or the examiner needed the body for investigative reasons for a very long time, and the family had already a memorial service of some sorts. From a financial point, funerals are very expensive, and bring a hardship upon many military families, who are among the poorest people who struggle these days.

Also if the country to which you gave your life to, will "handle" the remains, even I would presume that some basic respect would be given. I know its only a body part, and the person has passed, but symbolically they deserve our respect, even at this point. If someone told me, if you leave it with us, we will "dump it at the landfill", "flush it down the toilet" or recycle it for the "cat litter box", you bet I would not leave it with them.

PS. My dad recently passed, and I donated his body to science/medicine for research. I dont like the idea of him being cut open and gutted, but I feel its for a better cause. The only thing I asked from them, when your done, make sure to return my dad and not someone else to me.

                Incredible.

Vets should burn down 1/2 of Washing over something like this. But nothing will happen to anyone, and it will happen again somewhere.

Impossible. The families would have wanted the bodies or parts back in coffins for the bodies to be laid to rest

Here's the news story... Oh god.. how fucking disrespectful! They had signed releases from the families to do as they wish with the bodies, obviously the families thinking better of the US government

people who get suckered into military have no clue how much the system really just uses their american loyalty to control them but in the end, they are disposable pawns in an eternal game of power. as clearly shown by the governments treatment of both live and dead soldiers.
