Which countries DON'T have a national debt?

We live in the richest countries on earth yet we always read about balancing the national budget and the debt.

What counties aren't in the hole? Why are we in the hole anyway....is it even realistic to think that we'll ever get out of it?

Would our country and our lives improve in any meaningful way if there was no debt?

That's exactly what it seems like and I agree, that's the most likely conclusion to it all. What madness!

nononononono... nothing like that at all. They are one of the most prosperous countries in Africa with unemployment hovering and a nice low 20% to 40% and only about 36% of the adult population has AIDS. With any luck, they'll break the 36 year mark for life expectancy sometime soon as well.

I used to live there. It was great.

Actually, i was pretty young, so i didn't really know a damn thing about all the problems, and we lived in a fairly nice area (considering what was around our area).

Wow! That's interesting. Do you feel any special affinity or sympathy for what's going on having lived there or is it so distant now you could care less?

Was it segregated? What was that like?

I had a white Political Science prof in university who would describe living in the US when he was in highschool and fights would break out among the races.

There wasn't any segregation while i was there. Maybe before then, but i don't know. We lived in a small community built by the owners of the power plant my father worked at. So there were black workers and white workers in our little area.

I used to go to school with black kids, and used to play with them and all that. I'm sure racism was pretty common, but when you're young and innocent, the thought never really crosses your mind.

It's hard not to feel sympathetic for the way the country is. I mean, you've got kids being born, infected with HIV, and that's it, their days are numbered from the git go. Hard not to feel bad about it.

I don't feel attatched to the place though. Pretty much all of our friends and neighbours moved out of the country as well. Just a crapload of sand left behind really.

Prosperous western countries don't really have too much debt to other countries. That the balance of trade stats more than the national debt type stats.

The debt is to individuals / institutions and is held in treasury bills.
