you can set up filters in parental controls or use the mail center to block emails that contain the offending urls.

hope that helps.

Good advice.

It is too true. She STILL gave the daughters name and email address to somebody. That's all I'm saying.

Go after the Gap, they gave away your email. Sue them. Find the Gap board and ask why they gave away your daughters email address AND name.

So which search terms did you use to get to GFY anyway?

Rich 02-03-2003 07:52 PM

Also in case this is real, "8yearoldchild", I'll add that since they had your daughters name, it wasn't one of the random things people here are talking about, like e-mail everything @yourdomain.com. They got it from somewhere, make sure your son/daughter isn't on any chat rooms he/she shouldn't be or anything like that.

gothweb 02-03-2003 07:53 PM

How did you find this board?

Lensman 02-03-2003 07:54 PM

8yearoldchild, just for the same reason we are against your kid getting spam, I am against your user name of "8yearoldchild". So I'll let you post, but you're going to have to get a new user name. Because posting as "8yearoldchild" on an adult webmaster board is offensive.

Libertine 02-03-2003 07:55 PM

Email harvesting technique:

Send out a whole crapload of mail to almost every possible address at any of the well-known email providers. (list generators and such work wonders)

Make sure to include an "unsubscribe" link in your email.

Add all email addresses that are "unsubscribed" to your list.

Voila - you now have a list completely filled with working email addresses.

This isn't a case of simple email harvesting. The first name is involved. I get things addressed to Ryan daily, someone sold my name and email.

My only guess is that 2 months ago The Gap [clothing store] requested photos from children who would like to model their clothing sold her e-mail address when she submitted her photos. What porn site would buy e-mail address from a e-mail seller that gets their e-mail from model entries? It doesnt make sense.

A concerned and involved parent.

The Gap uses

http://www.digitalimpact.com/php/home.php

Which appears to be permission marketing. Selling email addresses to porn spammers would put them out of business very quickly.

Then there's stuff like this:

http://hoaxbusters.ciac.org/HBGiveAways.shtml

And sites with "tell-a-friend" traps.

There are also klez-type e-mail worms that harvest e-mail address lists from each Windows user automatically.

Tracking down the exact source of a spam letter may not be the best use of a concerned parent's time. I am glad to see you being proactive about the situation.

haha

I believe there are many ways her address could have leaked. Lists get sold and traded, a non-adult spammer that might have been spamming your addy might have sold his list to a porn spammer etc...

How it could get there, there are many many ways.

- Email diggers, harvesters
- employees selling lists
- opt-in lists that get sold to other people etc...

Get her a new address and try to keep it secret. Also hotmail works wonders for me for filtering out spam.

Tipsy 02-03-2003 08:09 PM

If real the solutions have been given and a truly resposible parent would have taken the advice by now and this would not be an issue any more. But then a truly resposible parent would also have had enough guards in place to start with. There's plenty of software to filter e-mails against adult content as well as general browser content.

If you are truly as intelligent and logical as you think you would have realised that coming to this board is in all likelyhood not coming to the 'soruce' at all. To taint all people running adult sites with the same brush as that of a spammer shows you are far less than intelligent and logical. To expect a spammer to automatically hang-out here is totally daft. There's unfortunately loads of the nasty little turds out there and only a percentage read this board.

Re-read the 1st posts, take the advice given and stop complaining because you have not until now taken your daughters protection seriously enough no matter how you try to deny it. You have been given advice on how to so do it this time.

If not real (which still seems more likely) the thread's achieved little other than to show you that if you aren't an adult WM yoruself the vast majority truly dislike unsolicited spam as much as yourself.

Que? 02-03-2003 08:13 PM

Ive twice reported spammers to the us justice department. They got an online facility for it. The two campanies stop sending shit for this or other reason.

Brad Mitchell 02-03-2003 08:19 PM

All I have to say is... Are you sure that it was the *GAP* that requested photos?

Brad

It is? There's silly me thinking it was just a reality. But then of course far better to ignore it as then all the spammers go away and the kids wont get porn shoved down their throats.

I suppose it depends whether you have kids and whether you take protecting them seriously. Either you have none and/or you don't give a toss about them *shrug*

Good grief - get real.

What a waste of time this bullshit is.

The posters behind this shit are either:

1. Nihilistic assholes with seriously overrated egos who think that this little microcosm GFY revolves around them.

2. Idiots with such low self esteem that they need constant attention.

I spend my time busting my ass all damn day trying to make a buck not just for me, but for people who join our program.

I have trouble kicking off a few posts before I head off to bed, or doing a drive by posting through out the day.

I did learn though that as my post ratio dropped, my income rose and I like that formula.

So it is with that I can add:

#3 Sad pathetic losers who lie about their income and status in this industry.

No matter how you cut it you don't win.

There are always tell tale signs that it's a "character," from one of these idiots.

The poster's first post is always something controversial.

This is what makes the person behind the post so fucking stupid.

It never starts off as "Hi I'm a wm from Oklahoma City thought I'd read the board for some tips on making money."

But more like, "Hi, I just made a new site with nothing but stolen images from the usenet and you motherfuckers can't bring me down!."

Anyway, I gotta go back to work...you guys just keep playing.

thefreakybeaver 02-03-2003 10:38 PM

As a mom of a 6 year old and a 13 year old, the question I must ask is why the heck does an 8 year old have an email address anyways?

You said she doesn't sign up for anything online so why does she need one?

People might disagree with me, but the internet is NOT for children period. I don't care why kid's sites there are online, the internet is NOT kid friendly!

If you must allow her one for some IMPORTANT reason, ditch the one she has now, get her a new one and YOU read her mail BEFORE she gets to see it!

Only way she can be getting this stuff is if someone used it for something, or if got picked up by a spider scaning through peoples email lists.

Someone who shouldnt have her email probably does.
That someone is probably someone you know, and that someone probably surfs buys porn and somehow the email leaked out.

That is extremely untrue. Spammers send blanket e-mails to AOL and several other ISPs, based on random word generations, so it is possible to get spam to an address that no one knows exists.

Also, if you use a small local ISP with bad security (I used to work for one), they might be subjected to blanket spams of every dial-up customer at the ISP. This is easily stopped if an ISP actually knows what they are doing and isn't operated out of some one's basement. It's pretty rare these days though.

Just get a new email address.
I can't believe an 8 year old has there own email addy.

Do you let her surf the net unsupervised?
you should probably keep a close Eye on him/her just like you would'nt let them flip to show time channel late at night.

Kids will do things you probably think they wouldn't very curious.

I'm in the industry and I can't get off lists best thing to do is monitor your childs email and while they surf online

I know for aol you can go under the master account of aol you can block all emails except for people you list. It was a really handy feature for getting rid of all that crap in my email box. Also I think there is additional email controls in aol that might beable to help. It is sad your email was not removed and none of the people you listed cared to do anything about it.

Why couldn't the spam start off with her supposed name? Plus if she uses any form of IM emails can be harvested off the online profiles as well (as well as the person's name if it's listed).

But you're right, that's still technically revealling the child's identity onto the net

Not quite...it's every parent's responsibility to protect their kids...if the child is too young to understand the concept of something or to protect themselves it is the parent's duty to help shelter the kid from potential dangers.

Would you let your eight year old kid walk home at night from a friend's house three or four blocks away? No...you'd be too afraid of the child getting hit by a car, kidnapped or injured in any sense....hell you probably wouldn't let the kid walk that during the day. And why not? Because the kidnappers should know better than to try and steal a child so that automatically will make it safe?

Protecting your child from harmful elements is a responsibility for parents in all aspects of the child's life. Expecting someone else to protect your kid's online life is not only naive but also irresponsible.
