In response to Denver Mayor Michael Hancock?s insistence that Occupy Denver choose leadership to deal with City and State officials, and drawing inspiration from the notion that corporations are people, Occupy Denver?s General Assembly has elected a leader: Shelby, a three year old Border Collie. ?Shelby is closer to a person than any corporation: She can bleed, she can breed, and she can show emotion. Either Shelby is a person, or corporations aren?t people,? said a Shelby supporter at the time of her election...

How do you not take that message seriously?
Trying to apply standard protest and movement tactics and logic to the Occupy movement is much akin to Revolutionary War Brits fighting in gentlemanly lines getting plinked off by American guerrilla tactics. It's not yesterday's protest... Adapt. This is sending a very clear message.

Socialist Dog Threatens Denver - Somebody bring a Pooper Scooper and some plastic bags...
The Occupy movement has been pretty adamant about remaining leaderless, but Denver?s mayor has been pushing them to name one to deal with city officials.
So the protesters put democracy to work and elected a leader: a Border Collie mix named Shelby. Shelby is ?a smart and fun dog,? organizer Aaron ?Al? Nesby assured his fellow protesters.
Plus she ?can breathe, bleed, and show emotion. These three things alone obviously prove she?s more like a person than a corporation."
Nesby nominated Shelby because he was annoyed when Michael Moore showed up and acted like the movement?s leader, he tells Westword. He figured a canine leader would be more down to earth. Shelby?s owner, 27-year-old filmmaker Peter Jentsch, promised to be her ?bodyguard,? but not to speak at all in any meetings with officials.
Shelby was elected by an overwhelming margin, but there were voices of dissent. ?What assurances do we have that Shelby will not sell us out for belly rubs?? one occupier asked.
The Denver mayor sounds like a nice guy...yeah, for Triumph the Insult Comedy dog...to poop on.

You think Gandhi would have even suggested a dog to be Prime Minister? And no one is laughing at them . . . . they are shaking their heads in disbelief. They really know how to prove they wish to be taken seriously.

In a leaderless movement, I think Gandhi would have seen both the wisdom, and the humor in acknowledging the border collie as leader. Whether or not Occupy wishes to "be taken seriously" has yet to be seen, but response from all over the world has proven there are at least a few people out there with attention focused. You think Gandhi would have even suggested a dog to be Prime Minister? We'd have to put that to a vote within the collective. I could not hope to represent everyone's thought process, that's for each individual to decide for themselves and voice. So far Denver's poll has shown at least one encampment, let's keep watching and see what happens.
