Watching police VS Occupy Portland Live

It is about 2:30am and things are starting to get interesting. The mayor had given Occupy Portland until midnight to vacate or they would be removed. Some of them left, but a few thousand other people showed up in support of them. For about two hours no much happened as the police waited for people to disperse on their own. Then the police announced that the people needed to move out of the street or they would use force including chemical agents to remove them. That didn't seem to do anything.

Now it is just a face off. One cop got hit by a flying bottle and got hurt. It looks like the riot police are now getting into a shoulder to shoulder perimeter around one park and on one street.

Could get very interesting before the night is over.

Looks like at the moment the police have decided to just let the protesters get tired, go home and disperse on their own. They are going with the wait them out theory.

The news is reporting that more people are planning a protest in that same area in the morning so it could grow again.

It will be interesting to see what happens when the core members don't leave.

I obviously cant say for certain that Occupy protesters haven't destroyed property... but I see these types of complaints everywhere in the liberal blogoshpere.

Well. . . that was anti-climactic. After a long night of face-offs the occupy protesters retreated back to the park and now this morning they are working with the police to help get the park and the mess cleaned up. I guess the next step is that they are going to close the park and clean it up so it will be interesting to see what those protesters do when the city wants to kick them out and fence off the park to clean it.

So basically the police didn't follow through and kick them out? Any word when they are going at it again? Might have to check this out.

Bottom line :

Nothing significant ever changes without some violence or destruction and some
"inconvenience" to the apathetic.

Police violence is what made the civil rights movement effective by drawing attention
to it. Most Americans were completely apathetic until the violence was broadcast
in the media.

very curious

in vancouver it seemed like they were shutting OWS down but now it seems the FD/city wants unoccupied tents and fire-type devices to be removed

was a weird 'tone change'

Basically that is it. When it all started the streets flooded with people. They estimate there were 3,000-5,000 people there. A lot of people left after a while and the police waited them out. Then at 5am the police told the protesters that they had to clear the streets or they would be pepper sprayed. The protesters then retreated back to the parks they were occupying to begin with. Throughout the night they had build a makeshift barricade around part of the park. After they fell back into the park they took it down and piled all the junk up. Once they were off the street the police fell back and everyone pretty much called it a night.

Now the police and protesters are working to clean the streets and parks, but they protesters are going to stay in the parks (so they say). The mayor says they will fence off and close the parks to clean then and repair them when they feel it is safe. I have a feeling that means they will work with the protesters and have them move somewhere else and likely will let them stay there as long as they play by some ground rules. The mayor says he wants everyone to be happy. He wants the city to be happy with no problems. He wants the protesters to be able to do their thing and he wants the other citizens of the city to be able to get around without issues. Portland is a strange place, somehow I have a feeling they will figure something out that will be a little odd, but will eventually work.

Because of this I thought we might see an ugly mess last night. OWS didn't get much press until they started clashing with the police. I think the Portland police were very wary of giving them a ton of nationwide press by spraying them with teargas and causing all hell to break loose.

Both the anarchists and the marxists who form the core of the OWS protests are playthings of the same forces behind the scenes. Not that anyone gives a fuck but I thought I would post some truth in this thread. I am not sure which group is dumber but they are both working for the same people. The anarchists are a closed group, you can't just decide to start hanging with them. The same goes for the organizers of the OWS protests; you cannot just decide to join them. You CAN become one of the kool-aid drinkers and follow their directions however.

It also isnt getting any warmer. Be interesting to see how that plays into everything as it gets colder. The cold in Portland isn't so bad but when it starts to rain it really sucks to be outside.

Kind of hard to imagine any kind of mass violence in Portland. We have the occasional shooting but overall in the SE/SW/NW areas nothing much happens. You can pretty much walk anywhere in Portland and at time and feel safe.

The crowd last night was HUGE and fiveOh was severely outnumbered...I don't think Portland PD was prepared for those kinds of numbers, so they backed off.

Is this your firsthand experience from actually trying to join with the anarchists and marxists, or just conjecture?

Granted many of the people that you are describing, go around with a "radical'er than thou" attitude which doesn't impress or convert many followers. I find that it is best to not get too hung up about the fringe elements and agent provocateurs that inevitably show up at demonstrations. Revolution is rarely a walk in the park...

Perhaps you should join a faction you are more comfortable with. I consider myself neither a anarchist or a marxist, yet I support some of their ideals, just as I support some positions which are considered conservative. I tend to identify with people more like myself, whom are mostly interested in creating a more just, environmentally sound and sustainable society, which puts people ahead of profits.

Love and Peace,

ADG

I saw some footage of one of the camps and it was a muddy mess. I can't imagine living in that. The rain is coming and it isn't going to stop for the next several months so living in a park like that is going to be an ugly, wet, muddy mess.
