    Any Vbull experts around?

    Using Vbull 4.1.7

Still in the tweaking stages, not 'live' promoted or showing up in the search engines yet BUT I'm getting 1-3 'Russian' spam bots (or real people) joining every day or two, posting their drive by spam (lots of "cheap shoe" posts lol)

What are the "must have" anti-spam plugins to help curb this shit?

Also, what are the top plugins you'd recommend for Vbull aside from anti-spam and security stuff?

The best is question and answer to register. Enable Akismet. Add a required custom user profile field.

That should weed out the spam bots.

As for plug-ins, be careful. Sometimes plugins can become a security threat later, or even turn rouge by the publisher. If it happens after countless plugins have been installed with custom templates it can become a real fucking nightmare, trust me.

As for security, that's the best part about forking the dough over to VB. You don't need any 3rd party security plugins outside of keeping your install updated. VB is diligent with their updates to keep everything fairly secure.

      That's the bitch of it....

I HAVE captcha, image verification and email confirmation setup for new registers and it is NOT weeding out the bots.

I have Akismit but there was something up with it, don't recall what exactly I'll go look at it again this afternoon.

Question and answer is different than captcha, it's in the 'Human Verification Manager'. If you use captcha you need to use your own images because most spam bot software will go right through what vbulletin provides preloaded.

Ok, I'll give that a shot, I'm using the captcha and the image verification thing...

          Image of an Apple

          The image above is what?

          Chicken
          Sports Car
          Apple
          Your Mom

dunno if THAT is the question and answer or not, I sent a list of stuff to my programmer to install.

Along with the Q&A, I also use vB Stop Forum Spam plugin on all my forums. After install, disable "Test User name" and never worry again.

Fletch we both know that is 100% TRUE, but as most people know, when I find a hole I'll try my best to fill it..... wow that sounds kind of dirty

I've never found anything reliable. In fact, it's been awhile since I used vbulletin but they were using some kind of backdoor to spam with.

Probably be better off just finding a script or apache module to block all traffic from Russia and other undesirable countries.
                      I don't endorse a god damn thing......

Forums are a headache, but that's not all they are. The members of our forum at the center of our network pay our bills just by posting.

                          @ OP

We use phpbb, but the only way we made spam minimal is by...

                          1. custom mandatory profile field in registration page

                          2. must have at least 1 approved post before they can go posting on they're own

                          3. newly registered users can't post links

That stopped 99.9% of my spam at the door. The rest gets stopped at moderation que for approval or dismissal. No spam makes it to the forum, members have no idea people even want to spam the forum.
