    How many of you

How many of you webmasters are actually programmers? I mean guys that know shit other than the basic html and dreamwaever stuff? How many are successful without know any of it at all? Just curious.

Not a professional but I can basically get anything I want done myself, besides flash.

Seen people have success online and not know how to put a site together and others that know every language and don't. It all depends on luck and how much you put into it..

I was a programmer before I was a webmaster. I can do C, Python, Perl and PHP.

That said, I can't design for shit. For anything that requires talent, I have to hire someone. I have acquired the skills that can be learned.

Never been the type that can learn much from reading books or tutorials, always just learned from experience or fooling around with something. But that's me.

Yeah, since the beginning of being a webmaster I have learned much more than "the basic html and dreamwaever stuff" I actually don't use dreamweaver anymore. I'm currently learning PHP stuff I can already write some scripts but I'm not fluent with it yet, it's probably because I don't learn more than I need.

I work for an art studio in my area that does mainstream web and print work. We get a lot of the business around town and there are 3 of us. I do most of the design work, One guy is mostly programming, the other does most of the print. We can all do print work but he is usually able to handle it. We all stay busy and it seems to work out. I have taught myself some stuff and I can understand coldfusion, php, jquery, flash well enough to not place too much burden on my other coworkers.

The one thing that has fucked with me for the longest time is databases. It isn't the sql, that's simple enough. I have problems understanding how to build them properly. These tables are going to have these rows here and these in this other table, etc... I will admit I have been pulled away from it over and over again and never really followed through with it.

There are more and more apps coming out that let me focus on designing/skinning and less on databases though, like wordpress, magento, mura, etc... but It's always in the back of my mind. I should try it again.

Anyway, best of luck with your reading. If you haven't tried lynda.com yet and can afford to spend money on it., it's good. Nettuts.com may have some stuff as well.

Trained as a designer, spent along time at the beginning of my web days on basic dreamweaver stuff, took me where i needed to go and nothing wrong with it, now i can do alot more but by no means would i call my self a programmer. Not many that can do it all! techie or creative, you're normally one or the other.

I can do basic stuff. I can build a basic gallery, do some basic graphics things like that. Nothing on a real pro level. I have always said that when it comes to porn people are there for the naked girls, not to be wowed by our html and graphic skills and am living proof that this is pretty accurate.

I grew up loving art but was told there was no money in it. I went to school for programming. At one time or another I had nice skills in a variety of languages but I love web design and web development because I can blend the two skill sets. I know enough that if I really wanted to get something done on my own I can do it and make it look pretty.

I've found that marketing and design, the main skills of the small web company, require a completely different type of brain than mathematical, the logic based brain of a programmer. That's why after fourteen years I still can't design or market worth a darn. Systems analysis comes naturally to me, but I'd need a completely different sort of brain to do what most GFYers do every day. I'm just not wired to be able to make an attractive page like most people here can. I'm wired to work worth arrays of hashes of references to anonymous lists.

A lot if webmasters learn some very basic scripting, but most don't really "get it" even when it comes to HTML, which is designed to be a semantic language with presentational concerns handled via CSS based on the box model. Most webmasters do presentation in HTML. Though they may learn about the box model, theoretical models don't REALLY make sense to them.

By the same token, I don't "get it" when webmasters try to explain to me how to set prices or any of the things they do. I can design database schemas with proper referential integrity all day long, but can't even choose a good banner, much less make one. They can do awesome banners, but wouldn't know a float from a *char if it bit them in the ass.
