My WRT54G finally went to networking heaven ...

So I am shopping for a new router, and have narrowed it down to 3 choices ...

Does anybody have any first hand experiences with any of these 3 routers?

- D-Link Gigabit Exteme N DIR-655
- Linksys E2500 Advanced Dual-Band N Router
- Linksys/Cisco Valet M10 Wireless N Router

All 3 are on my short list .... all about the same price ... I would like to know if anybody has/uses one of these, and do you like it?? Would you recommend it?

yeah mine was the WRT54GS .... with SpeedBoost

It was a great router for the past 5 years .... I had it flashed with DD-WRT firmware, and it ran like a dream until this past week ...

Im a network admin dont like linksys never did. My favorite is still good old netgear. It probably doesn't matter if it is just for wireless home networking.

I bought a Linksys E2500 for my mother a while back while I was visiting. She's completely technologically illiterate and I haven't had a single "my Internet isn't working call".

I'd say it passes the test for ease of use. The range, while I was there, was excellent as well and I was using an N Lappy with G phone... no issues and full N speed on the laptop.

It's for a home office ... 4 wired appliances and 3+ wireless appliances ...

I also stream lots of movies from my network storage server to my MacBook Pro, and have 2 VoIP services, so I am looking for something in the higher end home networking range.

I am using cordless phones (although they are 5.8 Ghz and DECT 6.0) ...

The Dual Band Linksys looks interesting ... does anybody have any comments as far as DUAL BAND (2.4 and 5Ghz) router, as opposed to Linksys/Cisco Valet M10?

Where are the GFY techie crew?

Yeah I'm not a big fan of Netgear ... They kinda left a bad taste in my mouth years ago with the Powerline range extender bullshit that never worked as described. It worked, but could not be secured, and left my network open to my neighbors

That E2500 does have my attention so far ... thanks for the input!

If you go with the M10 it's wireless N only ... meaning any iPhones (or other mobile phones that don't have N) wouldn't be able to use it...

Additionally if you have a single band wireless router and you use ANYTHING G... everything will run on G... (making your wireless N completely moot)

I did not realize it was NOT backwards compatible ... I thought Wireless N was backwards compatible ..

I have a Blackberry that I'm pretty sure is G (Curve 9300), so I guess we'll strike the M10 Valet from the list ...

I had my linksys router die a year or so ago and went with the D-Link DIR-655.. Been very happy with it.

Have had the D-Link DIR-655 for two years now - highly recommend it !! Range is great, never have any connection or drop problems. Admin menu has a ton of config options. Great router for the money!

Get a cordless that is 6 GHz and you'll be fine. A 2.4 GHz phone can definitely jerk with B and G wireless.

Well .... after doing some poking around different tech websites, it appears that 802.11n routers ARE indeed backward compatible with 802.11g and 802.11b .... you just will not of course be able to use the full speed of the Wireless N band ...

Similar to if you mix and match PC3200 RAM and PC2700 RAM, your computer would read both sticks as PC2700 ... A Wireless N router will send a signal to G and B devices, but it will only be as fast as their standard allows.

So the Cisco Valet M10 is back in the running also. LOTS of very good comments about this router ...

Fuck I hate decisions .... that's what I got a wife unit for!!

And according to the broad at D-Link, it messes with N too!!

DECT 6.0 is NOT 6 GHz .... it's actually 1.9Ghz, but that did not sound as sexy, since we already had 2.4 and 5.8 GHz .... so they called the standard DECT 6.0

And yes my 2 cordless phone systems are 5.4 GHz and DECT 6.0
