There is good news and bad news.

The bad news is my previous agent turned out to be a criminal that is now being prosecuted. Because of that and the contracts I had with that agent it put the book in limbo with the publisher. The good news is that I recently got a new agent who is working with the publisher to decide on the best possible scenario. This means eventually one of three things will happen. 1. The old agent will either be found guilty and I will be able to void the contract which will let the publisher then put the book out. Or, the agent could just volunteer to void the contract on their own, but there is little sign of that happening. 2. The contract eventually expires which will happen in about 10 months. This would free me from any dealings with them and I could move forward. 3. The publisher gives the old agent a payout in order to void the contract. The most likely version is that it will eventually expire. The publisher would pay the old agent, but they won't offer much because they don't know how well my book is going to sell and they don't want to pay a potential crook a lot of money to allow them to publish the book and have it fail. So at this point it looks like sometime towards the end of next summer is the publishing date unless the old agent gets convicted or cuts a deal and pleads guilty before then. |

In a nutshell: The story is about a woman who has been married to her high school sweetheart for 21 years. He is now sick and dying from a brain tumor. On his death bed he confesses to her that for the last three years he has been killing people - that he is a serial killer. He then dies in his sleep that night. She is left haunted by his confession and while she doesn't think it is true she hires a private investigator to help her find out the truth. They quickly learn that her husband was in fact who he claimed to be. They also find out that he had a partner whose identity is unknown. What they don't know is that the partner knows who she is and wants to kill her before she can learn his identity.

The story then follows her and this private investigator as they hunt for the identity of the partner. The police and the FBI doing the same and the killer who is trying to track her down and kill her all the while living out his sick fantasies. |

The book is set mostly in the PNW. Parts are in Portland, some in Seattle and there are smaller parts in San Francisco and New Orleans. It wasn't so much Green River inspired as it was inspired by wanting to explore the idea of one day having someone you know really well tell you something you really didn't want to hear. That said, there is a subplot in the story about a journalist from Seattle who has written several successful true crime books and she is writing a new one about this killer. She inadvertently ends up right in the middle of the mess. Her back story is that she shot to fame by writing two books on the Green River, one before he was caught and one after. |
