Stopping By Woods On A Snowy Evening

Let's all take a deep breath and stop hating everything and everybody - I'm as guilty as anyone. We're all here at GFY - maybe its time for a bit of co-operation.

Then again, maybe not.

Everytime I read this poem - and I have read it a LOT - I hear Vincent Price's voice. Uncle Vinny, I miss you.

Quote:
Whose woods these are I think I know.
His house is in the village, though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.

My little horse must think it queer
To stop without a farmhouse near
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year.

He gives his harness bells a shake
To ask if there is some mistake.
The only other sound's the sweep
Of easy wind and downy flake.

The woods are lovely, dark, and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.
Robert Frost. Stopping By Woods On A Snowy Evening. June, 1922. As Freddy Mercury might have said; "Sheer bloody poetry."

I love you all. No matter how little that means to you - it is the truth.

I drop my eyes, unwilling to explain...

Excellent choice! I'm going to add one of my favourite poems. This is what I end up reciting in my mind when I'm out hiking in quiet places.

"The Lonely Land" - A.J.M. Smith

Cedar and jagged fir
uplift sharp barbs
against the grey
and cloud-piled sky;
and in the bay
blown spume and windrift
and thin, bitter spray
snap
at the whirling sky;
and the pine trees
lean one way.

A wild duck calls
to her mate,
and the ragged
and passionate tones
stagger and fall,
and recover,
and stagger and fall,
on these stones -
are lost
in the lapping of water
on smooth, flat stones.

This is a beauty
of dissonance,
this resonance
of stony strand,
this smoky cry
curled over a black pine
like a broken
and wind-battered branch
when the wind
bends the tops of the pines
and curdles the sky
from the north.

This is the beauty
of strength
broken by strength
and still strong.

You - literally - made my eyes water with your reply. At the risk of being labelled a "wuss" (may be too late for me to argue against that...) I love poetry above anything.

Alden Nowlan, The Masks of Love...

Quote:
I come in from a walk
With you
And they ask me
If it is raining.

I didn't notice
But I'll have to give them
The right answer
Or they'll think I'm crazy.
So simple. So pure. So beautiful.

For a decade I've been telling people at GFY that I love them. In spite of my angry persona and my contrived bouts of vitriol, I truly love this place. Why would I even be here ten years on if I did not love GFY? I don't make any money here. I have no sig.

I love the vitality of GFY. The emotions, the opinions. GFY may not be what it WAS once upon a time, but it still has the ability to rile people up.

Unfortunately, too many of us are divided by politics and religion. But there will always be the English language, and - once upon a time - Americans dominated the language. They changed it to reflect the values of a new world.

Here are a few words from a true American:

Quote:
ME imperturbe, standing at ease in Nature,
Master of all or mistress of all, aplomb in the midst of irrational
things,
Imbued as they, passive, receptive, silent as they,
Finding my occupation, poverty, notoriety, foibles, crimes, less
important than I thought,
Me toward the Mexican sea, or in the Mannahatta or the Tennessee,
or far north or inland,
A river man, or a man of the woods or of any farm-life of these
States or of the coast, or the lakes or Kanada,
Me wherever my life is lived, O to be self-balanced for
contingencies,
To confront night, storms, hunger, ridicule, accidents, rebuffs, as
the trees and animals do.
(Cut and paste - I could not honestly remember the words...)

Master of all or mistress of all. Beautiful.
