Damian is dead right. No one knows and it's all best guessing.

What is the porn business?
Where are we counting?
What are we counting?

For counting read guesses.

The stats I saw in 1998 about. Included everything.

Video retail sales and rental.
Cable
Phones
Internet
Toys
Clothes
And a few other things.

Ann Summers a chain of UK sex shops. In 2007-2008, had an annual turnover of £117.3 million. ($193 million) The UK is probably a smaller market behind the US and other EU countries.

The idea that Manwin get close to that is silly.

Start multiplying it around the world and you get a picture. Vague one but still something to think about. And in the UK there was also other porn retail outlets.

Here's a clue to the value from a few years ago f one sector of porn.

10,000 video titles a year, duplicated 10,000 times and sold for $30 each.

$300,000 a title.

$300,000,0000 for a years production of videos. Rental was alway said to be the same as sales. So double it. $600,000,000 Add cable.

That was the figure for the US only. AVN said that more than 10,000 titles were published every year. In the US.

But it's all guess work as Damian says.

Start thinking in terms of magazines and again there's little factual evidence. The last reliable ABC figures for 2 UK magazines was 300,000 each. If true, start to add that around the world. At $5 a time. If people couldn't buy the last edition of Max Hardcores video, they bought porn magazines instead.

The problem is maybe as many as 90% of the porn business is small companies with no published audited accounts. So getting reliable figures is impossible. We're clueless how much Manwin make or worth. Like Damian is clueless what I make or worth, we're all guessing.

My guess is a lot of the money spent offline, moved to online. And a lot of it was loss. Free was available and we all know the stories of members downloading a whole site in a month and canceling. Not to buy again for a few months. Were people lying back then or were we losing millions in retained members?

what is true is the decline of the offline porn industry hasn't been matched by the growth of the online porn industry.

Now you can call me clueless instead of a logical reply.

Pure speculation, there are few porn business that make public statements on revenues.

That being said, $30 billion or so sounds like a reasonable assumption -- but be aware that this would include all porn online (the majority), adult video rentals and sales as well as the little remaining in magazine publishing. In other words, the whole enchain.

Seeing breakdowns by niche would be most informative ... I would guess that the live cam industry is $2 billion to $4 billion dollars a year in revenues in itself maybe (pure speculation but probably not that far off).

How Adult Video News gets this number is not clear. We asked Adult Video News' managing editor, Mike Ramone. "I don't know the exact methodology," he said, "It's a pie chart."

Seek thy pie chart and thou shalt find the answer.

Until then, these statements always make for an interesting read.

Tough one to answer as the biggest boys jumped into other areas.

The top money was in porn shops. Online won't ever over take those earnings. So look around at who had the most shops. The mafia were said to own a lot. That was the end of pornography they were into.

Middle men like publishers, again some of the publishers had names that could be linked to well known "families". Especially New York.

Flynt would be my guess of one of the biggest. David Sullivan made a lot of money as did his partner in many things David Gold. They both went into retail porn. Their likes will never be seen again. No one in online porn comes with a 100 miles of them. Manwin??

1 video title duplicated 10,000 times and sold for $30 each. = $300,000

10,000 titles a year X $300,000 = $3,000,000,000

Correct?

What ever I get wrong with my bad maths, the big money was in the shops.

You couldn't walk into a shop and jerk off to the covers. In Europe there were the enclosed video cabins. These we cash cows, guys pumping coins in as fast as they could to jerk off. Also peep shows.

I have never heard of an online porn office that looked like this.

http://www.thelocationportal.com/8484_Wilshire.html

Or an online sponsors house that looked like these.

Or an online sponsors who bought a football team. A professional one, actually bought they 2.

Does anyone have anything documents about online pornographers?

Mallick's worth a pretty penny.

I actually always liked this article which deflated those numbers and also called out that the $20 billion was not part of any study. http://www.forbes.com/2001/05/25/0524porn.html

I love this quote, because it's so true.

"Skepticism is in order, though, because as David Klatell, associate dean of the Columbia Graduate School of Journalism notes, "[Pornography] is an industry where they exaggerate the size of everything."

Back in the day when other programs used to share their numbers with us verbally we always had a rule to divide by 2 if not 3 depending on who you were talking to.

I think the $ around the porn industry as a whole is irrelevant and the more important factor is that pretty much 99% of men enjoy watching adult entertainment is the more telling factor. It's a huge market.

C'mon Alli, give us a ballpark of what you think. You and a few other may actually have an idea, so there isn't rampant speculation.

I searched and searched, and I finally found conclusive evidence that I have no idea what the world wide porn market is worth.

I thought I knew, but I was wrong.

It was tough enough prior to online porn. Still an educated guess could be made. Corporations that had to have publicly available accounts. Knowing what a main stream porn film sold for and how many dupes it took. Big porn companies with addresses you could visit and see and often get into.

Today with so much of it online and no accounts, it's impossible to tell. You here stories of a company employing 100s, but rarely know anything more than the story. Not having a go at Manwin here, they are reportedly now the biggest company in porn. Has anyone seen their accounts, seen the publicly available information of their address or know anything about them other than second hand information or "bros" stories?

I picked up on their Canadian office and 300 staff said to be there. With experience in selling office interiors and furniture to companies with 300 in house office staff. I could look at the info being given out and see it was highly skeptical. Idiots focused on the post about toilets. The fact is Fabian was clueless about the sq ft that's required for 300 people. Called me names for posting it. When faced with the facts he claimed it's not his job.

I'm telling you a CEO of a company with 300 office staff knows this information. 3,000 office staff it might get given to those lower down, 30,000 it definitely will .300, no way. Yet people didn't question this about "the biggest company in porn" Doesn't make sense.

So if that's how hard it is to pin down anything about "the biggest company in porn". Pinning down the T/O of porn world wide is impossible. Because no one knows what most do. AFF did a share launch and it seemed to crash badly.
