Check out Drive Solutions. Their business was next to ours in Chatsworth. They had to listen to girls moaning and groaning all day while we were shooting or editing. I think they're now in Westlake Village.

Ask baddog, he took one of my old drives down to one in California for me years ago.

If it continually spins you might try a program like Get Data Back first. I have successfully retrieved data off of "dead" drives a number of times over the years using this method. I did have to buy some hardware as well to wire the internal as an external.

They offer a demo so you can see if it can read your data before actually buying the software.

Good luck. I know how bad those situations can suck.

GDB will only work where there's "virtual" damage, such as file system corruption. Dropping a HD onto the floor, with subsequent clunking sounds, is more likely to be physical damage...

JP, no backups?

We had same issue, this week in fact. Techie tried to ghost a copy off the drive...but couldn't. Said "It Dead." Gonna try those solutions up top but probably you and us is screwed on this one....the dreaded clicking sound.

You're probably screwed unless you pay $5000 or so, but ...

Do not try any tool that could change anything on the drive.
You're goal is to READ an image from it. You could try dd_rescue and many people report that putting the drive in the freezer first has helped.

If the drive has to be opened and platters removed it's big money because you're dealing tolerances measured in millionths of an inch.

The good news is that of maybe a hundred and fifty drives, none I.ve had have required that level of repair in order to get the data off. If you're not going to spend the big bucks, I can see what our procedure can do for you.

Check out backing your shit up to, like, anything.

No data recovery service is going to grant you anonymity. You have anything on that HD you're not happy with and you're toast.
