I loaned several thousand to a family member to keep a business open, that I actually gave him too. It's been 16 years and got only 1/5th the money back and why we don't talk because of it.
yeah, that is an all too familiar tale for sure. If I ever am asked I just tell them i'm giving it to them or investing in them.. that way I'm not disappointed or let down if it never comes back and they don't feel the need to avoid me...not overly affective but it's a lot better than hounding people for money though.

After getting burned several times I now get post-dated installment checks up front. While it's no guarantee, you have something tangible to show there was an agreement of sorts as opposed to a he-said-she-said verbal agreement.

If they disappear/start ducking your calls you can still deposit the checks. If they bounce for insufficient funds or stopped payment you still have proof of not getting paid if it comes to that, plus they will still take a financial hit for the inconvenience they are causing you.

I think a lot of people pretend to be in the industry but have secretly dropped out.

Getting someone to respond is difficult at this point.

Its a cheap lesson to learn!

Never lend out more than you feel okay about not getting back again. It will show if they are true friends or not when its payback time, even if they can't pay they would stay on top of it.
If they are not at least you know what you can expect from them and decide if you wanna waste your time with them or not
