The problem is that even if no direct financial incentive is involved (like owning shares in a prison), people still have an incentive to protect their own interests: example: a DA getting a high conviction rate at the cost of locking up an innocent person every now and then,...Comment

I failed to understand this concept at all. And I couldn't disagree more.
At age 17 I had dropped out of high school and was a drug addict. I was broke, and homeless. My parents didn't help me at all. At some point I decided this wasn't the life I wanted to live, joined the Marines, and by age thirty had two college degrees. No one helped me; My father died when I was a baby and obviously my mother and I didn't get along at all. I started with nothing, I was strung on drugs, flat broke, and homeless.
Everyone has the same decisions to make, and some do better than others. But don't tell me that if you grow up poor you don't have the same opportunities. You can be dumb as fuck, drop out of high school, but at some point you have to turn around and say "This isn't working for me, I need to go to college". Anyone can go to college; No local college will turn you away. Hell, I'm still paying off my school loans.Herschel Savage

I have no children. I do however pay more than $1,000. a month in taxes that go directly to the FREE public education system. A system that provides free transportation, a decent education and even free food if needed.
Failure to take advantage of this opportunity is a personal decision that fucks drop outs for life. But it is their decision.
