              Didn't Plenty of Fish make millions by being a "crappy" site? I like nice looking sites, but I think "crappy" sites do well, because the ads are either more attractive and appealing, or are just a quick way to escape the ugliness.

                          Yep!

                          I really wish I wasn't so anal when it comes to designing sites. First, it would mean I'd get more (something) done, and more quickly; second I don't think surfers give a rat's about a nice looking site. Craigslist is another example. Ugly as fuck.

                          But yeah, I'm pretty sure at the time the POF guy got his million dollar Adsense check he actually said (or someone did) that that his site was so ugly people clicked on the ads.

                                          Plenty of Fish does great with it's "Crappy" design because the founder focused on more technical things vs. design. Also was one of the first "Free" dating sites, when Match, eHarmony, etc were all charging.

                                          The founder also mentioned that they get a lot of pageviews because some of the skewed and stretched profile pic thumbs make people want to click on them more. Because surfers see it's a messed up thumb and want to click through to see the actual full size and non skewed pics...
