I get the DVR from my local cable company. It's free with my package, although I'm sure I'm paying for it one way or another.

I had a Tivo with the DirectTV tuner built in back when I had a old standard definition tv, but when I upgraded to HD a few years ago I was given a DirecTV branded DVR for free and I think it is as good or better than the Tivo I used to use.

MythTV. You get a better DVR without any copying controls or anything and you own it forever, for $300. You can easily customize it by adding larger drives, more inputs so you can record more things at once, etc.

If you have TVs in other rooms you can also repurpose old computers as extra front ends to watch your recorded content in other rooms.

I always liked the Tivo interface, but it was hooked to a phone line(do they still do that?) and it didn't feel integrated with my system. I had to switch to another TV input, etc.

The Cable DVR interface isn't as nice, but it feels more organic to the cable box and TV, and everything is right there without having to go through any steps -- and I don't need the extra "Tivo" box taking up space. Actually, I remember throwing my Tivo in the dump, and it wasn't a major decision to do it. It just got tossed out with some old computer cases and other debris.

So, I like the DVr better.
