Really? I watched it as well and was terribly disappointed. I'm a big Kevin Smith fan too. I was hoping this was going to be the true throw back to a horror movie like he said it was. I guess I expected way to much. There was no horror to this at all. It became an action movie.
Without giving up too much detail for those who haven't seen it yet I just thought this could have gone in a totally different direction and been a really good movie. Oh well...
What you mentioned is about the only issue I had with it. It wasn't a "horror" movie as billed.
But aside from that, I was on the edge of my seat from start to finish. And like you said, you can't really mention too much without spoiling something.
Right, certainly not as bad as Jersey Girl but I did read a quote that said something to the effect of, Cop Out is no longer the worst movie on Kevin Smiths resume thanks to Red State... Granted he didn't write Cop Out, he just directed it, his name is still attached.
I just hope the hockey movie he's currently doing is better than this. Red State was hyped so much for the past 2 years that the let down is so much worse because of it.
I liked Red State too, except I preferred the original ending he had envisioned for it. I think it would've made the movie so much better.
SPOILERS!
in the original ending you would hear the horn sound (which would actually be the sound of the wrath of God, not a fog horn joke), and suddenly see something of a slow motion bloody explosion come out of every character's chest (both good and bad characters) as the beginning of the apocalypse reigns down upon all to be judged. I remember him saying that the movie would fade or cut to black with silence for a moment, and then end with the sound of horse hoofs galloping, signaling the arrival of the Horsemen of the Apocalypse.

haha... I just watched the trailer for it... even the trailer got worse as it went on.
I have a fully fleshed out treatment/outline for a kids vs aliens screenplay that I've been sitting on for a while. When I had heard about this, I was a bit bummed.
But since watching AtB a few nights back, I've managed to write the first 15 pages.

That ending definitely would have been better... I just really wish the movie had been taken on a totally different direction. A more detailed look at the church/cult and their doings would have made for a better plot. Focus the story more on their history, show more of their 'work' and not lead into the fire fight so quickly... Oh well, too late now.
I liked it, because I could not figure out what was going to happen, or who was going to die. Lots of curveballs. That's the mark of a good movie. I think I also liked it because it was so NOT a Kevin Smith movie.
This is the first Kevin Smith movie that is not a Kevin Smith movie. If you're expecting dick jokes, probably shouldn't bother.
Right, good point. Not your typical dick and weed jokes you've come to expect from a Smith written movie.
As for Clerks, it's still one of my favorite movies. Definitely my favorite Smith movie. I live about 15 minutes from where Smith is from and shot that movie. I've been in the Quick Stop and RST Video a few times. I got one of my tattoo's from the shop that was in the same little shopping center.
