Any ideas on how to get rid of this virus

I noticed some tiny ads/icons in my firefox browser, any ideas on how to get rid of these. I think its from click ads... I am looking for a manual method since I already scanned my computer a couple times with some spyware/virus programs. Thanks

first look to see if there are activated plug ins or extensions via the firefox menu.

if you are in windows, you may want to look at the firefox items in the registry to see what is getting loads.

check out dns and other servers to make sure you havent become a victim of a man in the middle attack.

Just posted so I can keep my eye on this thread. The same thing happened to me after I installed Firebug, but it doesn't seem to be affecting anything.

first time I ever heard of that, did you try reinstalling ff? Otherwise, without no information at all is very difficult to understand what you mean

but Macs gets virus and trojans as well, not as much as PC (basically because of the amount of PC against the amount of Mac), but since Mac started growing, so started the Mac virus. Which makes a lot of sense, since it's people who spends more money, usually not very savvy and they were told Macs will never get viruses, so they have no precautions at all. As a matter of fact, I remember reading a warning from McAffee regarding this, and the so called MacDefender virus did a lot of damage the last couple of months

Please cite a single example of a mac virus in the wild, that does NOT require you to acknowledge it, and enter your password...

well, for starters I did a search for firefox tiny ads trojan and the first results it gave me will probably kill your computer, so beware. If I was you, I'd download ESET NOD and superantispyware and run in safe mode to find the sucker, then while still in safe mode I'd delete FF adn reinstall a fresh copy. I doubt you will need more than that

Yes I tried that and even updated ff with the newer version, the little adds do change, for example "deals", "get rid of this virus", etc. Small icons/box's below the address bar.

I would take a screen shot and post, but if the computer is going I just want to transfer image files out first to my external. I must have 100 GB to move out.

wow interesting I forgot to mention since this happaned a week ago, the virus protection did catch the Trojan, but browser was still effected.

I will need to try the solutions you mentioned above later, at the moment on my wifes laptop...and not sure how anyone is productive using a laptop without a mouse...it feels like I have 2 left hands.

I will check it out and report back,

the last time I got a virus at my work computer I tried to hide it from the administrators and did a rookie mistake. I think it was exploror 8 browser the virus made belive it was attached to the .dll file. So I deleted the .dll file but then remembered you need these files so the computer works properly. I went to the recycling bin to restore it and it was empty. So I now get errors when I start the computer, but everything else works okay.

Yes that's an economical thing to do. dumbass. Oh as far as Macs, security through obscurity is not security at all.

do you remember the name? If you don't, check out your AV logs, there's probably a way to fix it, maybe you have something in the extensions folder like ottopottomouse said (if so, I know what you probably have).

Also, you can try this: zip the extensions folder (just in case) and save it anywhere you want. Delete everything inside it (just not the folder itself) and see what happens. If it's gone, the worse that could happen is that you'll need to reinstall some extension. If not, just save your profile files and delete everything related to FF: program, profiles, everything. Do not let anything. Then do a clean install. With this, I'd bet 90% of chances the problem will be gone. If the problem persists, then it's more complicated and you have something else and you'll need to edit the registry, but without more info, hard to say. Anyway, try that and let us know

To be fair, one of the security issues with Windows is people run as Administrator, rather than as a limited user. Having said that, when seeing a popup about whether they want to run a program, most people will probably just click OK anyway.

And after being infected with a very severe "virus" a while back, without doing anything other than visiting a site via Google images (not even porn), and with Malwarebytes and Windows "Defender" installed and running, I was left with having to format and re-install C:\. I decided instead to stop using Windows altogether and just stick to Linux.

I'm a very careful, paranoid and savvy computer user, who avoids 'dodgy' websites and have never had a problem until recently, but these days I believe Windows is simply not safe to use even when browsing the web. Lots of innocent sites are hacked and infected with bad code.

One of the funny things after I started using Linux all the time is, I have visited "virus" laden sites which depict a "scan" of your PC and report "viruses" found. It's funny seeing it "scanning" drives and folders that don't even exist, and a reminder that if I'd still been using Windows it would have been time for yet another re-install.

BTW, it's simply not true that Linux (and Unix based Macs) are safer because less people use it, so it's less of a target. Linux/Unix is by far the popular/common server operating system in the world.

Edit: to be fair, the kind of person running a server should be (but isn't necessarily) more clued up than a desktop user, plus people who use Linux probably are more likely to be nerds and more aware of security or dangers.
