Renting an office vs working from home

Seriously thinking of getting myself an office to work out of. When I first started I used to love working from home now I am starting to hate it with so many distractions and being here all the time.

Getting an office is a smart move. Sometimes it gets hard disassociating work with relaxation time when you have a home office. It gets to you.

I know my productivity went up 10 fold when I got myself an out of house office a few years ago.

I got one a few years back and was super productive for about 6 months, and then I started getting tired of making the short 3 mile trip to the office and I was increasingly "working from home" again.

I work from home. I have a separate space set aside for work. When I feel the need to get out, I go grab coffee or a lunch and margarita. Works pretty good so far.

I also work from home full time. Some time I hate it when I don't leave my chair for hours. I am planning to buy an office as well.

I've both rented office space and had a home office.

If you haven't yet, try having regular business hours in an office that is nothing but an office, but still in your home or on your property. If you have family living in your home with you, explain when business hours begin and end and what time your lunch break is. Be firm about that with yourself and your family. Your office will not have a TV, and on the other hand you won't be checking stats at 9pm either.

Work during work time and be with your family during family time. After trying that out you may decide to rent an office or not. Either way, you will have developed some good habits.

I tried this and had similar results to Candyflip. I worked harder and got more done but after about months I got tired of driving and started working from home more.

For me the best solution has been getting a house with a free bedroom in it that I made into an office. I bought a pretty nice desk, got a nice chair and made it look officelike. I go in there in the morning and shut the door and get to work and I just told my friends not to bother me during certain hours just like I was at work. I still sometimes have lazy days, but I seem to get a lot more don than when my desk was just in the corner of the bedroom.

Same here, been doing this for 10 years. Things is that back in the day it was less hassle, less work hours, more fun, it didn't interfere much with your life. Nowdays it's a fucking nightmare you want to finish and go home.

I recommend trying to create an office space at home and looking at what you do that you can outsource.

Once I used to do everything myself, now 80% of what I used to do is done by my team. Nobody can distract you from blogging if you get someone else to do it for you. Nobody can distract you from installing a script or building a gallery if you have it outsourced.

Look at what you do that you could get someone else to do and concentrate your time on living life and being a strategist.

Buy 2 homes. Office in each. I often find myself heading off to the beach and I can focus on things much better. Absence weekly from loved ones often makes time together much stronger. I love working at home.

They say 3 hours is a perfect drive for a 2nd home. To really feel like a getaway. I say 2 is perfect.

Some great advice in these replies. Thanks to all.

The drive/traffic wouldn't be a problem for me, theres plenty of office space available at a big business park like 5 minutes from me. Might have a look at a couple and see if I can get a short lease to see how I go.

I had an office for a while, but as I work US hours and live in Europe, it was me and the cleaning ladies at 10pm at night.

So went back to having a home office.

Cuts your over all profits instantly.

If you can own the place and rent most of the rest of it out, then take a small corner for yourself then its worth it. But do the math first.

Set up a real home office instead and that will do you.

Getting an office was one of the best decisions I ever made. Then getting a NICE office with lots of small professional businesses and office admin services in it was even better.

And a 2-3 minute drive from the house to boot!

I did the same thing. was great to have the office but turned from getting there around a little after 9am to rarely going at all, then to the point when the mailbox had a letter that i had to go to the post office because there was so much mail

Woke up, felt all motivated to get some shit done.. Sit down and get started. 15 minutes later, wife comes in spewing a bunch of negative shit, taking shots at me. Lock the door behind her. 10 minutes later knock on the door, just need something. 10 minutes later, knock on the door, mom is here cuz she hurt her back, she needs a paper. Sit back down, literally 1 second later, knocks again. I smile. Answer the door, asks another question. Now I'm going to the bank for her - in another city.

And this is why I sleep during the day and stay up all night.

Buy a condo in the city and a house at the beach or mountains.

Have an office set up in both places and just bounce between them. Never commute between them during rush hour.

I finally got an office, through Regus exec suites. I love it, it is 2 miles from my house, I bike to it and pack a lunch.

It has allowed me to separate my work from life emails, files, etc. as well as just being able to leave work at work.

And biking here and back combined with not being at my house with my fridge hasn't been bad either.

I highly recommend it.

As for the argument against getting an office citing traffic; Totally baseless, Why would you leave your home at 9am and leave work at 5pm. Adjust as necessary, you are still your own boss. I get to the office at ten am and work until around 7pm to be home for a late dinner.

I also hate Mondays so I take a three day weekend.

Offices rock.

I have a seperate room just for work. I found neediing an office was when i was a headhunter cold calling isn fun and when you have bang out 100 of them a day. Being in place where you cant go fuck off helps dramatically. If i had kids i would get a seperate office.

Yeah traffic sucks but so do people after a while who sit alone with 4 walls and become socially awkward after years of working online. There are advantages of actually being around other humans.

I second Yanks' recommendation for Regus. While I would probably never rent a full-time office outside of the home any more, having periodic short-term places to work when I'm traveling is a big boon, and most of Regus' centers are top-notch.

It also can't hurt to just move around a bit -- coffee shops, libraries, hotels, malls, etc. Just go out for a few hours and work somewhere else. Distractions are going to be everywhere, including an office.

You know what I do, I go either to my girlfriends house, or go to Starbucks with my laptop.

I get an amazing amount of work done at Starbucks. Sometimes for the cost of a coffee or muffin, I get 4 hours of completely undistracted work done with only a few ogles at the girls. I even would do this when I was working in Hollywood, and there are plenty of distractions there...

Getting an office/desk space is the best thing you can do. it separates business from your personal life and helps you focus on each of those things fully when needed. I am a big believer in renting office space.

I got an office earlier this year, best thing I have done. Why not try it out for 6 months and see if you like it? It is all a tax write off anyway.

What kind of space do you have? In Brooklyn?
I just got back to the city last week, need a desk for 2 months, and am leaning towards getting a desk at 611 broadway @ houston

Depends on what you need really... If you are a 1 man operation than maybe you're fine in a home office. I was fine in a home office until i started having kids and such and then i needed a seperation between my home and work life. Not fun having a conference call with a big company and then one of your kids runs in and tells you that you just ran out of toilet paper LOL!

I know lots of people that love to work from home and it works for them but i find for myself being in an office is much more productive for me. Plus having the ability to walk into the next office and talk to a colleague is a lot more personal than an IM conversation

Home office is the best ... no commute .. and the coffee is all yours.

You have to maintain a working schedule. For me - I am online at 7am and go to about 6pm each day. My laptops / smartphone is always around for calls / emails that are important post hours.

I take 30 mins for lunch .. and no TV in the office. This works for me as I can get everything done.

also you have to have a dedicated office in the house. I have a back bedroom that is my space for work only. On "non work hours" I have a LAN set up in the house in another room so I do get some "out of the office" time.

Seems crazy to me that anyone goes to get work done in public at a Starbucks, especially porn related work.

I have 2 dedicated rooms for office space in my home ...
Desks and office furniture.

My commute is 40 ft to my office and work or I commute to Rotterdam 6294km to the office.

I need a Lear Jet and a house in Rotterdam ... working on that

Lear jets went out last yr But hey, I know where youre coming from

@the thread, it really depends how self motivated you are, if you need to be away from home to work, an office rented seperatly is your best move, if you are dedicated & can continue working for an extra hour after feeling like sitting back, then stay home, save the travel & enjoy being in your own home with an office available at 2 in the morning

Everyone should have both. An office in the house for days you just don't feel like going anywhere or late night sessions on the computer for stuff like GFY.
But you need to have a real office.
1. I love my employees we are like one big happy family, but that doesn't mean I want them at my house all the time.
2. I love the girls that work for me, they pay all my bills but I don't want their alcoholism, drug addictions, boyfriend and husband drama, etc. etc. at my house all the time.
3. Massive amounts of props, lingerie, dildos, vibrators, anal lube, etc. etc. are all tools of my trade but I don't want them laying around my house all the time.

I think you can see that everyone needs an escape. You need to go home. If your work is at your home there is no where to escape too.
Do yourself a favor and drop at least a couple hundred a month for a small office somewhere. You can go cheap because it doesn't have to be in the main part of town because you need customers and walk in traffic. Hit the backstreets, sidestreets, any old streets just find some cheap rent and get the fuck out of your house so when the day is done you can go home and relax. It's Miller time or whatever the hell you do.

How much do you pay with regus? I been meaning to try them out when I am traveling.
