I finally got my ad up and running, and over two days I have a 15% click through rate, but my signups are trailing the cost of my ads.... Badly.

Is this due to a small sample size, or is this pretty much a cost that everyone accepts to get their name out there?

If you're getting 15% click through you're getting a lot of people with no intention of buying anything.

no adwords isnt worth it

nobody makes money with adwords

all those hundreds of thousands of people

none of them make a profit

You need to laser target your ads and make sure that your keywords have high buyer intent.

This is easier for physical products.

If you wanted to do an Adwords campaign for, say, the Xbox 360, the keyword hierarchy would be something like this:

video game console < xbox < xbox 360 < black xbox 360 = white xbox 360 < 60GB xbox < 60GB xbox 360 < buy xbox 360 < buy white xbox 360 < buy 60GB xbox 360 < buy white 60GB xbox 360

Adding words such as buy, sell, sale, shop, online, credit card, paypal, and whatnot to your keywords will GREATLY increase your sales even moreso than using the exact product. In fact, using buyer keywords like that will usually have a higher conversion rate than exact product name + description, even if the phrase with the buyer keyword is less specific.

You can push a 50% conversion rate with Adwords if you do it right.

The other thing to take into account are your earnings per sale. If you're only getting $5 per signup, then maybe Adwords isn't right for you. With a $.50 PPC, you'd need a conversion rate over 10% to do just break even. This'll be hard to do initially.

Use a proper keyword research tool like Market Samurai to, as explained above, laser target the correct keywords for your campaign. You can find free training videos on the web site.

Remember that with adwords type advertising, people are telling you up front what they want by the query they type. Your site has to deliver it, and your ad has to make it clear that they've found exactly what they were looking for. So think carefully what query matches your site perfectly, and strictly limit clicks to be only from those people as much as possible.

Yeah, there is no learning curve and no cost to learning. B asically you just turn it on and get rich. If you're not rich yet, double check your Adwords settings.
